Nestled in the bay just off the coast, Boston's Harbor Islands are rich with history and intrigue. Each is known for its unique appeal and backstory, with a string of larger narratives tying them together en masse. The Harbor Islands IPA series grew out of the exploration that took place in our Permutation Series, where we developed a new series of IPAs that showcases extraordinary hops, building on our team's experience brewing hoppy beer at Trillium. Learn more about the Boston Harbor Islands from Boston Harbor Now.
During colonial times, the island, then known as Manning’s Moone, was mainly used as a grazing site for nearby farms in Dorchester and Quincy. Today, a ¾ mile long causeway actually connects the Island to the Squantum neighborhood of Quincy. Moon Island has an elevation of 98 feet providing exceptional views of downtown Boston and Peddocks Island.
Pouring a amber orange with moderate haze, Moon Island IPA’s signature Simcoe dry hop gives off an dank and spicy aroma bursting with notes of pressed orange, ripe mango, pineapple rings, and lively grapefruit zest. The palate builds upon the nose with a touch of fresh squeezed lemon balanced against a light, pillowy biscuit malt backbone. Moon Island IPA has a soft, mild mouthfeel and finishes with a gentle, clean bite of pine tips.
MALT: Pale Malt, Honey Malt, Victory Malt
HOPS: Simcoe

Picked-up the last two cans yesterday at the Trillium brewery in Canton for about twenty dollars. My eleventh brew from these guys. Solid brew. As with all Trillium beer, wish the price point was a bit lower.

Really enjoyed this beer, could be my new favorite from Trillium. A little bit of sweetness but not too much. Smooth feeling going down. Drank from a can. Drinking the next one tonight and already looking forward to it.

From a 16oz can, dated 03/13/19. Served in an IPA glass.
Pours dark and murky, a dull burnt apricot color with two fingers of lathery, sort of dirty-beige colored foam. Retention is very good, leaving a lumpy cap and bubbly clumps of lacing.
A robust, yeasty nose of sweet, sticky, overripe fruit.
Taste is as expected, sweet sticky pineapple and mango initially, then comes the citrus, pink grapefruit, orange, lemon juice and a bit of spice. Sweet, some bitterness but also some harsh graininess and that dreaded smoldering wire taste - not at unbearable levels, but definitely noticeable - which combines with Seville orange for a long-lasting, oily aftertaste.
Feel is juicy and oily, medium bodied with abundant-verging-on-aggressive carbonation - the super-bright carbonation accentuates the oily aftertaste.
Overall, it’s OK but I’m not tempted to have another.

To me this beer is emblematic of trilliums decline. Where there used to be crisp flavor and hop bite, there is muddled sweetness and maltiness. Not a fan of this one at all.
