Our tour of the New England coastline continues with the Lighthouse Series. Like the Harbor Island IPAs, our brewing team's innovative Permutations were the genesis for these beers. With amplified strength, the Lighthouses will continue to showcase specific hops while paying homage to historic New England landmarks.
At the southwestern entrance to Casco Bay, Maine sits Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse. Built in 1874 the 67-foot structure is flanked by a keeper's house - both buildings can be seen from nearby points on the rocky coast of Two Lights State Park. Our homage, Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse double IPA, uses Citra hops to build off the foundation we explored in recent Citra-focused double IPAs. The beer pours with a bright orange shade and a moderate amount of haze, capped by bright white foam. A nose of ripe orange, grapefruit lest and lemon leads into flavors of tangerine, pineapple and mango. Mellow, fruity sweetness provides a contrast to pleasant citrus pith.
This beer is an iteration on our previous release, Marblehead Lighthouse - we were notified that another brewery was using that name, so to avoid confusion we headed up the coast to Cape Elizabeth!
MALT: Pale Malt, Honey Malt
HOPS: Citra

Pours orange color with a solid 2 finger foamy off white colored head that was packed with tiny bubbles, dissipating very, very slowly and leaving really nice foamy lacing and a layer around the rim.
Smells of orange peel, gummy bears, tangerine, orange juice, guava, pineapple, graham cracker, caramel, light biscuit and honey. It smells like Razzles and Circus Peanut candy dipped in pineapple juice.
Tastes like it smells with tart orange juice, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, red grapefruit, orange peel, gummy bears, guava, citrus fruit, biscuit, graham cracker, caramel, chalky yeast, Razzles candy, grassy notes and faint peppery spices. The malts come through bready and sugary and seem to turn the hops sweeter.
More sweetness overall with a stronger than normal malt presence than I'm accustomed to for a Trillium DIPA. Normally the hops are seriously dank and pungent, but they must have dropped off a bit since this can is a month old. The alcohol peeks through a bit too and trails off with a warming sensation, not a smooth as expected.

Tall can...with 1/16/19 stamped on the bottom.
Typical TBC, fully hazed up and classic NEIPA look...squash soup/orange juice in color.
Dank and ripe fruit nose.
Loaded with ripe pineapple notes. A hint of smoke, limes, mild scallions...dank/herbal/tropical/delicious/complex
World class and highly enjoyable creation. Go get some.

This one pours a very hazy dark orange color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This smells like orange and mango hop juiciness, biscuity granola malt, pineapple, and honey.
This is basically your prototypical Trillium IPA, with some light honey and grainy malt sweetness, as well a large drippy and juicy hop character- mango/pineapple/grapefruit/orange/etc - all the stuff that is in basically every good NE-style IPA.
This is medium bodied, thick and creamy, with a great level of drinkability, and a soft mouthfeel.
NE-style IPAs are beginning to taste basically all the same- at least the good ones. This is one of the good ones.

16oz can dated 1/16/19.
Pours murky gold with an inch of bone foam. Retention and lacing is moderate. Peach, mango, and orange in the nose. Medium bodied with a tacky, chewy mouthfeel. Ripe tropicals on the palate with some light malt and honey. Candied peach and mango. Finishes with honey-drizzled citrus.

Can from Fort Point weekend of EBF. Yellow sewage water with boozy lacing and minimal head, smells like sticky rotten stone fruit and bitter dank hard candy, taste is sweet orange flesh with a dank peak and bristling bitter finish, medium bodied and prickly. A shining beacon of flavor, if you will.

Poured from a 16 oz can from 1/16/19.
Look: deep orange color with thin white head and lacing
Smell: like fresh squeezed orange juice, some pine
Taste: strong orange and mango flavor initially with a bitter finish of orange pith
Feel: juicy and thick, typical for a Trillium NEIPA
Overall: I really enjoy the lighthouse series from trillium and this one was one of my favorites in the series so far. The alcohol content is a bit more prevalent than in some of their other IPAs in the 8-9% range but a really solid and juicy NEIPA with a distinct dark orange look.

Had this on 2019-02-10 in Columbia, PA from a 16oz canned on 2019-01-16
A - Very hazy golden-orange with a 3/4-finger white head and moderate lace.
S - Fresh, ripe peach, mango and orange. Mildly dank, hop floral. Enticing
T - Pungent vegetal/grassy/herbal spice up front. White grapefruit flesh, mango. Chalky/yeast. Light Zwieback cracker. Not getting the peach I noticed in the aroma. Alcohol is present and lends some sweetness. Finish is mild-moderately bitter with some white pepper and that grassy/herbal spice and orange pith.
M - Medium full body and light-medium carbonation. On the soft side.
O - Another well-done DIPA from Trillium.
