Marking another collaboration with our friends at Goodnow Farms in Sudbury, we are proud to present Chocolate Goodness. For this special beer, we drew inspiration from rich European drinking chocolates. To match that soul lifting and indulgent experience unique to sharing mugs of these thick, chocolate forward elixirs, we conditioned Chocolate Goodness on over 500 pounds of Goodnow’s single origin cocoa powders sourced directly from farms in Latin and South America. This intense chocolate infusion created a rich extraction of color and aromatics.
Pouring a dark chestnut brown with a khaki-mocha head, Chocolate Goodness announces itself with exhilarating aromas of Parisian-style chocolat chaud, dark chocolate bark, and luscious chocolate ganache. A sumptuous palate builds upon the nose revealing immersive flavors of chocolate mousse, dried dark berries, bright cacao nibs, and warm chocolate fondant. Full bodied with a faint chocolate bitterness, Chocolate Goodness has a silky mouthfeel and a mildly lingering sweetness that makes for a decadent and satisfying finish.
ABV: 10.2%
MALT: Maris Otter, Munich, Caramel, Pale Chocolate, DRC, Black (Patent), Roasted Barley, Flaked Barley
HOPS: Hop Exract
ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS: Goodnow Farms Cocoa Powder, Lactose, Madagascar Vanilla Bean

On draft at the brewery, in a stemmed glass
Muddy dark brown, totally opaque, no head. Aroma is obviously heavy on milk chocolate and vanilla sweetness like chocolate cake. Some bitter cocoa in there too .
Taste is very fudgey, but not overly sweet. Definitely a dessert beer. Body is thick and chewy.

L - Pitch black, finger of brown, soda-like head
S - Off-smelling coca-cola/stale soda smell
T - Same as the nose. Everything is off, and anything there is terrible
F - Standard for the style. Has some carbonation. Leaves a slight sticky sensation
O - Uhh, terrible. A rare miss on these big stouts. I'm also hiccuping uncontrolably as I write this.

Drank from a 25.4 fl oz (750 ml) bottle purchased at Trillium Brewing Company, Boston, MA
Served in a tulip
Pretty unattractive appearance. The beer poured a surprisingly thin, muddy brown color and slightly chunky. Not sure if the chunks were from the yeast or the cocoa powder. A small, bubbly, tan colored crown topped the liquid but it quickly fizzled away. No head retention or lacing whatsoever. By the drink’s end, a fine sediment coated the glass.
The aroma was pleasant but somewhat nondescript. Malty and smooth. Caramel malts were apparent. Touch of roast. Nice amount of sweetness. Vanilla was noticeable. Subtle cocoa powder notes were also detectable. Hint of booze.
The flavor profile was similar to the nose. Pleasant but lacking in character and not very chocolatey. Nice melding of caramel and roasted malts on the front end. Some vanilla came through in the center. The finish was super acrid and metallic initially, but these notes fortunately dissipated rather quickly. Some caramel and cocoa powder lingered after the swallow.
Lighter bodied mouthfeel for the style. Slightly creamy and slick. The liquid contained a medium bubbled, fairly aggressive effervescence. Almost a touch spritzy/over carbonated.
Goodnow Farms is one of the best bean-to-bar chocolate manufacturers in the country, but the 500 pounds of their cocoa powder that Trillium used to make this beer was lost on me. I was hoping for a big, bold, imperial chocolate bomb, but instead this drank more like a typical American stout with subtle chocolate notes.

poured from a 750mL bottle into an oversized snifter. pours a muddy brown with even muddier head. look is somewhat like a barleywine. smell is straight cocoa powde. not much else going on. taste is bittersweet chocolate. feel is decently full. perhaps a bit too carbondated for my liking. this was a pretty odd one. with a name like ‘chocolate goodness’ i guess i shouldn’t be surprised it’s as one dimensional as it is, but i was hoping for more.

Pours opaque dark chocolate brown with a chunky hot cocoa looking head. Smells like fresh chocolate, hot cocoa, chocolate cake, ganache, mousse, dried dark berry, vanilla, and cocoa powder. Tastes like chocolate, chocolate milk, hot cocoa, chocolate cake, mousse, ganache, dried dark berries, cacao nibs, cocoa powder, caramel, vanilla, with some creamy lactose sweetness. Feels medium thick bodied, silky smooth with moderate low carbonation. Overall a really nice imperial stout with chocolate, vanilla, and lactose.
