Sinister Kid is named after the unofficial mascot of our Congress Street brewery: a long forgotten, dismembered doll unearthed in construction rubble. We dusted off Sinister Kid and breathed new life into her, installing a new pipe leg and a wire arm. We quickly found a new use for her evil appearance: keeping an ever present, protective watch over the first floor of our Fort Point restaurant and brewery.

This year, we've crafted what we consider to be our most complex variations of Sinister Kid to date. We took the base Belgian Strong Ale recipe, fermented it with our native New England yeast culture for two years in both bourbon and wine barrels, then transferred the beer to our oak foeders to condition on a variety of fruit. The six resulting blends are intricate expressions of wild yeast, time, and fruit all coming together harmoniously in the bottle.

Wild Sinister Kid: Cherry Malbec is a blend consisting of 90% wine barrel-aged beer and 10% bourbon barrel-aged beer conditioned on Malbec grapes and whole cherries. The aroma presents a bushel of red fruit ranging from plum, raspberry, tart cherry, and concord grape. Complimentary wood-derived notes featuring vanilla and cinnamon add depth while a structured acidity and creamy mouthfeel round out each sip.

ABV: 10.6%
Malt: Pilsner Malt, Abbey Malt, Special B, Carafa III

Leftpaw brought this out for Thanksgiving '21. Shit I thought this was a New Mexico beer, now I'm learning its from way far away.

Pours a dark brown. Bits of dark red to it. Doesn't amass much in the way of a head, smattering of brown bubbles just lays super thin 1/50" range. The aroma has all the red wine, sherry, dark fruit and boozy heat notes you can shake a stick at.

Taste brought more of the same, while the sourness, bitterness and acidity weren't out of the norm, the big time booziness seemed to amplify all those attibutes. Red wine acidity bitterness seemed to be burning a hole through me, but it was the alcohol. Just don't think double digit abv wild ales are my thing. It tastes like burning and I didn't even eat the purple berries. I got less cherry in this than hoped for. Way more plum. Vanilla seemed absent. Light vinegarish influence. For me, this one was all about the boozy heat, everything else was a distance second in terms of perceptions.

Gosh, looking at the scores before me, I feel like a real party pooper. I guess I owe this one another spin. But with a BSPA base, I think I know the culprit of the high booziness. Prolly won't change my opinion on this one, but I'd be willing to try.

Wowie to all the zowies. Spank me, baby, because I want it. Spank me baby, because I like it. Woo! This one hits the Raul man in every which way. It’s saucy, it’s naughty, it’s petite, and sweet... This is pretty much the girl next door that has a spicy side. Yeah, I think I’ll let her “baby sit” me for another night.

Peace!

I have tasted the best wild ale I've ever had. This is an absolutely brilliant sour. Copper colored, a brilliant complex revelation of flavor: oak, a wine start that transforms into tart but not too sour cherries. Beautifully done, Trillium!
