How many breweries does it take to conceive of a modern-day interpretation on a nearly extinct, yet incredibly complex traditional British Strong Ale closely related to Barleywine and Old Ale? We once again teamed up with our friends at Cloudwater, Other Half, Monkish, and The Veil to brew Threads, a brightly acidic Stock Ale inspired by a rich history of English Brewing. Brewed back in March of 2017, Threads was aged in a variety of barrels including Bourbon, Apple Brandy, Rye, and Maple Bourbon.
After nearly 30 months in oak, we thoughtfully blended portions from each to present a final beer that is incredibly thought-provoking and complex. Nearly three years in the making, Threads, alongside three single-adjunct variants, is now ready to be enjoyed. In the glass, Threads presents a deep chestnut color with a fleeting beige head. The aroma is enticingly layered, offering dark fruit notes up front, with a rich sherry character playing a complementary role. Fig, raisin, dried apricot, and black cherry approach the palate in waves. A hint of sweetness paired with a full-bodied mouthfeel is tempered by a bright lactic finish rounding out each sip.
ABV: 15.2%
Malt: Maris Otter, C-120, Simpsons DRC
Hops: CTZ, Centennial Chinook

Drank 02.2025, it was sour and bitter but based on my notes from a variant, this might have been somewhat characteristic of Trillium's take on this style. I have two other variant's left and will evaluate whether or not I delete this review based on how they have held up. Cellar conditions are excellent but my bet is that the beer was spoiled somewhere along the line...

Pours a deep, translucent mahogany brown with an insignificant tan head.
Aroma is heady and deep. The barrel finish is apparant but has to be nosed out and is not immediate, nor directly identifiable as any specific spirit. Dark sugars, plum, fig, raisins and roasted chestnut.
On the palate there is a quick hit of alchohol that rapidly broadens to follow the nose of dark, stewed fruits. A persistent acidity offsets the sweetness to create a perfectly balanced ale.
Stock ales are a rarity even within the UK these days. This is a perfect example of the style with layered complexity, acidity and sweet notes well balanced. A beer to sip and savour.

Pours dark red maroon brown with a dissipating tan head. Smells like raisin, figs, dried fruit, dark fruits, black grapes, prunes, stewed plums, cherry, apple, toasted bread, caramel, dark toffee, molasses, hints of chocolate, some apricot, oak barrel, apple brandy, maple bourbon, rye whiskey, bourbon, and earthy leafy hops. Tastes sweet and fruity, kinda dark, a bit like a barleywine, rich with dark fruits and dried fruits, maple bourbon, apple brandy, rye whiskey, bourbon, caramel, chocolate, dark toffee, molasses, apple, grapes, plum, figs, apricot, cherry, raisin, berries, toasted bread, oak, earthy leafy hops, tangy with rich sweet notes lingering. Feels medium-light bodied, smooth and slick with moderate carbonation. Overall a real nice blended barrel aged stock ale.
