How many breweries does it take to conceive of a modern-day interpretation on a nearly extinct, yet incredibly complex traditional British Strong Ale closely related to Barleywine and Old Ale? We once again teamed up with our friends at Cloudwater, Other Half, Monkish, and The Veil to brew Threads, a brightly acidic Stock Ale inspired by a rich history of English Brewing. Brewed back in March of 2017, Threads was aged in a variety of barrels including Bourbon, Apple Brandy, Rye, and Maple Bourbon.

Aging a beer in oak can often provide an innate nutty quality, but for Almond Threads, we wanted to amplify that aspect of the beer. Aromas of Amaretto and Montmorency cherry shift to dark chocolate covered fig as the beer warms. A kiss of acidity washes away an incredibly rich and full-bodied beer from the palate with ease, leaving us reaching for the next sip.

ABV: 15.2%

Malt: Maris Otter, C-120, Simpsons DRC

Hops: CTZ, Centennial Chinook

Additional Ingredients: Almond

Bottle dated December, 2019, drank out of a tulip January, 2022

Look - thick and flat, no head

Smell - alcohol, barrel, strong

Taste - bitter and somewhat overpowering from an acidic or bitter bite at the end. Love the barrel if I could figure out which one, which is not listed on the label. I was going to say cognac until I read the barrels listed on BA, I guess the brandy is the dominant one. No hint of almond. They all combine to put up a nice barrel punch.

Feel - Medium mouthfeel.

Overall - I didn't think this was a great beer, but it may or may not have been a good representation of a stock ale. Aging could have diminished the almond a bit and the bitterness could have overpowered any maltiness - check, that's a stock ale. Loved the barrel, but you just don't need that many barrels. Why not just one or two that you can taste rather than 4 that you can't distinguish from one another? This beer appeared to be a classic example of a group of brewers getting together trying to have some fun and not knowing where to call it quits.

Pours dark red maroon brown with a dissipating khaki tan foam head. Smells like booze soaked raisins, figs, dried fruit, dark fruits, black grapes, prunes, stewed plum, cherry, apple, some apricot, toasty almonds, toasted bread, caramel, dark toffee, molasses, hints of chocolate, oak barrel, apple brandy, maple bourbon, rye whiskey, bourbon, with mild earthy leafy hops. Tastes sweet and fruity, rich and slightly boozy, a little dark, a bit like a barleywine, with dark fruits and dried fruit, maple bourbon, apple brandy, rye whiskey, bourbon, oak barrels, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, dark toffee, molasses, graham cracker, apple, grapes, plum, figs, apricot, cherry, raisin, berries, toasty almonds, some earthy leafy hops, finishing tangy with rich sweet notes lingering. Feels medium-light bodied, smooth and slick with moderate carbonation. Overall a really nice blended barrel-aged stock ale with almonds.

Thin head, dissipates rapidly.

Nose is a bit subdued, even at room temperature.

In the mouth, "complex" would be a positive spin - but by end of bottle was feeling more like this was disjointed - almonds come through, as well as hints of a lot of other elements (oak, apple?, tart fruit (cherry?), etc). Somewhat sweet, but nice bite on the finish cuts that from being cloying.

Mouthfeel is nicely thick - this is a sipper. Alcohol is amazingly hidden.

Overall - a very confusing drink . . . is this even beer? What did I just have? Did I enjoy it . . . I guess; would I buy it again if it were available (it won't be) - nope . . . not even if it was priced much lower than it was.
