Cutting Tiles - Galaxy Double Dry Hopped

Pours Thick apricot juice haze.
Little white head that dissipates and then leaves a film.
Smell is sweet and fruity - tropical. You can smell the alcohol on this one.
Taste matches the nose. There is a hop bite and a definite presence of alcohol. Still maintains some drinkability too. IT's a slower sipper to be sure because it is so big.
Good beer. The DDH citra is my favorite.

 

 

Picked up a growler of this from Armsby Abbey of all placed! They were allowed to do growler fills due to Covid-19 so I made it a point to swing through and support a local business while enjoying an act that up until now has been illegal in the state of Massachusetts. Filled in a 32oz Trillium growler.

A - Poured into my Duvel tulip a super murky milkshake orange juice hue but darker...almost greyish or muddy. Fat almost two finger head faded incredibly quickly to leave thin, fizzy wisps.

S - Aromas of dank hops, over ripe pineapple big time along with flashes of grapefruit rind. Little bit of biscuits. the mango is faint but this is still clearly a Galaxy hopped beer.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with enormous dank hops, candied pineapple, juicy pineapple, juicy fruit bubble gum, almost white wine grapefruit flavour. Decent amount of spicy hops as well along with coming across as rather pithy and chalky. The finish is slightly grassy hops before becoming quite spicy and bitter. Bit of a surprise.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, thick, almost heavy, but so thick that the carbonation comes across far too low. As it warms it starts becoming a chore to drink this.

O - Overall this beer was quite the let down. I haven't had a hoppy Trillium beer in quite some time and...yeah I'm not sure if I would go out of my way to have some of their hoppy stuff again. Had lots of potential but ignoring the borderline mediocre appearance and mouthfeel this was quite flawed on the taste. While not utterly terrible this is utterly pedestrian. It'll be a chore to finish the 32oz growler.

POurs a med fizzy bubbly head with med-low retention, no real lacing, very hazy cloudy pale-orange-yellow color, milky white

Nose is actually danker than I thought, maybe the fresh dry hops, dank with grassy dry hops, but behind that comes the Galaxy, juicy pineapple, some citrus, mango, papaya, juicy tropical fruits, with light doughy malt

Taste brings the pineapple up front, big juicy pineapple and tropical fruits, papaya, little citrus pith, tangerine cream, soft creamy malt getting a bit doughy and pithy chalky like, hint of warming alcohol mostly hidden, then the grassy dank dry hops kick in and get a little bitter pithy rind like, drying on the finish a bit more alcohol comes through with some bitterness and lingering pineapple rind, but bitter astringency late, really just sucks the life from my tongue, hard to get past that

Mouth is med bod, creamy lush juicy, med-lighter fizzy carb, touch of warming alcohol esp on the dry finish, starts to get astringent as well, like really astringent probably from the crazy amounts of dry hops

Overall not bad, has some points that shine, and some that doesn't, not one of the best Trillium beers, but still better than most NEIPAs from other places (aside from the obvious Hill, TH, Alchemist, etc).

Completely opaque, dull orangey-yellow appearance. This looked nearly identical to a glass of Tropicana orange juice. The body was topped by a small white film of bubbles that quickly dissolved.

The aroma was outstanding. Super tropical fruit forward and appropriately sweet. Ripe melon notes came through big time. Both honeydew and cantaloupe. Loads of juicy mango too. Moderate amount of dankness. Peach candy rings were also apparent. Hint of citrus. The sweet peach notes intensified as the beer warmed.

The flavor profile was also fantastic. Citrus came through much stronger here. Juicy orange notes dominated. Good dose of tangy tangerine as well. Some grapefruit was noticeable too. Big pineapple presence in the center. More grapefruit on the back end. Pithy grapefruit rind-like notes carried into the lingering, moderately bitter finish. Touch of dry yeastiness. Nicely balanced overall.

Medium bodied mouthfeel. A touch thinner than I anticipated. The beer contained a fine, fairly zippy effervescence that turned creamy, frothy and smooth as the liquid moved along the palate.

The Cutting Tiles series is one of Trillium’s best, and this galaxy double dry hopped variant is particularly amazing. After having countless New England IPAs, many of which seem to taste quite similar to each other, it takes a lot for any to really impress me. This beer, however, definitely did.

 

Wow, this beer is pretty! I think it's the prettiest hazy I've seen. I'm loving the dry dry finish to it. It hides the alcohol very well too. The only thing missing for me is that the smell doesn't pop the way my favorite Hop Butcher hazy IPAs do. I'd buy this one again anytime and Trillium's reputation is well deserved.

 

 

 

 

This is a big beer. This has slam, powerful hops, great look, intense taste. Trillium knows how to brew IPAs.
