Pouring a lively golden-orange with an inviting haze, Mettle Alloy Batch 6 offers an aroma that shifts from citrus towards overripe tropical fruit as it washes across the palate. We're first greeted with the trio of grapefruit pith, lemongrass, and orange juice before lush candied pineapple and sweet mango make an appearance towards the back of each sip. Medium-bodied with a soft approach and well-integrated bitterness, Mettle Alloy Batch 6 remains highly drinkable for a Double IPA.

Drank from a 1 pint can purchased at Trillium Brewing Company, Boston, MA
06/11/20
Served in a tulip
The beer poured a cloudy, pale straw yellow and was topped by a small, frothy, bright white crown that quickly dropped to a pencil thin collar. A few tiny streaks of lacing stuck along the glass.
The aroma was super hoppy and intense. Peach and mango notes came through big time. Apricot was also noticeable. Touch of papaya as well. Overall, really fruity and bold. As the beer sat, subtle citrus notes appeared. There was a hint of alcohol too.
The flavor profile was very solid but quite different from the nose. Citrus notes dominated up front. Big juicy orange presence. Tangerine was also noticeable. Pineapple came through in the center. Grapefruit appeared as the beer moved along the palate. The finish contained a potent, pithy and bitter, grapefruit rind-like character.
The mouthfeel was terrific. Rich, creamy and fuller bodied for the style. The liquid contained a fine, fairly zippy effervescence that turned velvety smooth on the palate.
Trillium’s Mettle Alloy series sounded like a kitschy attempt to use up some of the brewery’s leftover IPA batches during the time of Covid, but that definitely was not the case here. While I initially thought the idea of a “blended IPA” seemed ridiculous, this beer was legit.
