The brainchild of Marcus Baskerville, Founder and Head Brewer of Weathered Souls Brewing Company in San Antonio, Texas, Black is Beautiful now includes over 1,000 breweries across the globe each utilizing the same recipe and common brand to establish a global, unified voice. Each member brewery pledges to donate proceeds from the sales of the beer to a local non-profit organization that supports equality and inclusion, police reform, and/or legal defense funds for those that have been wronged.
We were humbled to have Ray Berry Jr., founder of Springfield's White Lion Brewing reach out to us and offer to collaborate on our versions of this incredible beer. 100% of the proceeds donated from White Lion's version will be donated to the Healing Racism Institute of Pioneer Valley, while the entirety of the proceeds of the Trillium version will be donated to Lawyers for Civil Rights, Boston (LCR). Founded in the wake of the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, LCR fights discrimination on behalf of people of color and immigrants through legal action, education, and advocacy utilizing a vast network of pro-bono lawyers.
For our version of Black is Beautiful, we brewed the shared recipe from Weathered Souls (80% component of final beer) and blended it with two currently unreleased bourbon and rum barrel-aged beers (20%).

16oz can in trade from Tfontana, thanks for the opportunity!
Dark brown with a thin tan head that persists.
Sweet creamed coffee with bits of chocolate and lots of vanilla. Tasty but a bit on the sweet side for my tastes.

L - leaves a trail of liquid amber out of the can and into the glass. Settles into something much darker, a nearly impenetrable shade of brown-black. Tiny bit of fizzy head that quickly dissipates into a beige ring.
S - exotic and lively. Bourbon, prickly vanilla, and dark fruits. Figs and prunes ride high, along with dark red cherries and dark chocolate. Perhaps a hint of coconut at the end?
T - warm and toasty up front. Cinnamon, vanilla extract, and Golden Grahams. Baker's chocolate, toasted marshmallow, and brown sugar sweetness. Woodsy and syrupy. A touch of rum to finish it off.
F - not nearly as thiqq as 10.7% should be, but it features a silky mouthfeel and low carbonation to make this decadent and sugary.
O - loving the bold and pointed cinnamon vibe. Quite an "upper" of a spice, which should tell you all you need to know about this beer. It's energetic, exciting, and full of unique flavor experiences. They might not blend together as majestically as they could, but it certainly makes for a fun beer.

Drank from a 1 pint can purchased at Trillium Brewing Company, Boston, MA
08/06/20
Served in a tulip
This was a collaboration release with White Lion Brewing of Springfield, MA.
The beer poured a medium bodied, dark chocolate brown hue. A small, frothy, mocha colored crown topped the liquid, but it quickly dropped to a pencil thin collar. Drippy streaks of lacing cascaded along the sides of the glass.
The aroma was pretty unexciting initially. Dark malts dominated. Big toasted grain character too. Moderately roasty. Some chocolate notes were also detectable. This reminded me of a pretty average porter or stout. As the beer warmed, the nose became bigger. The vanilla came forth, as did some brown sugar sweetness and rich boozy notes. Hint of bourbon perhaps. More chocolate as well.
The flavor profile was similar to the aroma. Dark malts were most prominent. This tasted like a mix of roasted malts and nutty, toasted grains. Some chocolate was noticeable in the center. Touch of brown sugar sweetness. More roast on the back end and the finish. Hint of booziness too.
Medium bodied mouthfeel. Fluffy and slick on the palate. The liquid contained a finely beaded, greater-than-average effervescence.
Despite Trillium’s efforts to doctor up this Black Is Beautiful recipe with a mix of rum and bourbon barrel-aged imperial stouts, it was still pretty mediocre. That said, the concept behind this beer is definitely noteworthy and I was I certainly glad to support a good cause.

Pours a beautiful black with dark brown and ruby highlights, with a lasting dark tan brown creamy foam head with good lacing and retention. Smells really nice, toasty, bready, caramel, dark toffee, chocolate, fudge brownies, molasses, cooked brown sugar, rum, mild bourbon, oak barrel, char, fresh vanilla beans, some dried dark fruit, with earthy herbal hops. Tastes real interesting and unique with fresh vanilla bean glaze, some dried dark fruits, chocolate, roasted malts, hint of smoky char, dark toffee, caramel, molasses, brown sugar, maple, rum, mild bourbon, hint of leather, tannic oak barrel, toasted bready malts, dark berries, plum, with a touch of earthy herbal hop notes. Feels medium plus bodied, creamy and slick with smooth moderate carbonation. Overall a really nice and unique tasting blended imperial stout with Papua New Guinea vanilla beans.
