Named as a reference to a parable from the Bodhicaryāvatāra, I Have Become the Boat is a Mosaic and Citra-hopped DDH IPA brewed by our friends at Cloudwater Brew Co. in Manchester, UK. For our latest Freaky Friday, they've been kind enough to allow us to brew our take on a favourite from our British mates.
In addition to pellets of each varietal, I Have Become the Boat is heavily hopped with Citra and Mosaic Cryo. Pouring a hazy, deep yellow colour, this DDH IPA offers a vivid array of fruit-forward aromatics We perceive notes of candied orange peel, mango mochi, pineapple gummies, and mixed berry. Medium-bodied on the palate, each sip finishes with just enough grassy bitterness to keep the drinking experience refreshing throughout. "Come along on a fantastic voyage because the boat is made to carry us all."

Traded for this with a friend recently, as I never had nor heard of this before. This wasn't a bad beer and would easily check off all the proverbial boxes for those who love Trillium, but this was just a bit too tangy and one-dimensional for me although this was still a relatively easy drinker.
The pour to this was typical for a New England IPA as it was golden, hazy, and moderately radiant. Enough head topped this off as the lacing left behind was in the form a few rings in the middle of my pint glass, with some spotty splotches around them. Lots of pineapple, gooseberry, exotic and earthy hops, and candied citrus in the nose as the taste was also quite tangy. The Mosaic really came through in the taste as there were hints of dry lime and sharp grapefruit that made my palate tingle quite heavily! Slick and full-bodied from the oats and wheat, I could hardly taste those as the hops needed to be dialed down just a bit. Thankfully, the carbonation was pretty full as it kept this beer light throughout, which was needed as the flesh and heavy rind had to be kept in check.
The amount of booze was on the mark, however, as it was present but never felt throughout my time with this. Some herbal notes stuck around in the aftertaste as if this was a fermented tea. Dated 2/3 on the bottom of the can, this wasn't Trillium's best and the Sanskirt writing on the can was a first but overall, this was as much gimmick as it was a new taste. Drink it once and have a chaser of water handy as this taste was certainly not from these parts!

The appearance was very atypical for a Trillium hoppy beer. Moderately hazy and thinner in body for the style. A fluffy, finger-tall, bright white crown rose above the yellow ochre liquid. Sheets of patchy lacing stuck along the glass. On the second pour, more yeast sneaked into the glass and the liquid became hazier.
The nose was somewhat lackluster initially. Candied orange peel was most apparent. Bit of ripe peach too. As the beer sat, some dankness from the Mosaic hops appeared. Juicy orange and tangerine notes were also detectable. The dankness really intensified later. Fresh cannabis came to mind. On the second pour, some yeasty notes appeared. The citrus also took over and the Mosaic hop notes disappeared.
The flavor profile mimicked the nose. Citrus notes dominated. Orange and tangerine specifically. Both sweet, juicy flesh and pithy, bitter rind. White grapefruit appeared as the beer moved along the palate. More grapefruit and grapefruit peel on the back end and the finish. A fair amount of pithy bitterness lingered after the swallow.
The mouthfeel was somewhat unusual. Lighter bodied for the style. The liquid contained a super fine, but rather intense carbonation that felt quite airy on the palate. Even with time, the carb seemed rather aggressive.
I Have Become The Boat was somewhat one-dimensional initially, and both the flavor and aroma became more muddied after the trub was added on the second pour. This might be a solid summertime crusher, but I would not go out of my way to buy it again.

Pours cloudy hazy opaque yellow gold with a creamy white foam head. Notes of dark berry, dank cannabis, pineapple, mango, tropical fruit, citrus peel, earthy herbal floral hops, with mild caramelized biscuity malt. Feels medium plus bodied, creamy with moderate smooth carbonation. Overall a real nice double dry hopped IPA.
