Drank from a 1 pint can purchased at Trillium Brewing Company, Boston, MA
02/10/22
Served in a tulip
The beer poured a medium bodied, dark brown color that bordered on black. A thin film of khaki colored froth topped the liquid, but it quickly broke into a thick, lasting collar. After each sip, a wall of spotty lacing trickled down the sides of the glass.
The aroma was somewhat disappointing initially. Roasty notes dominated. An oxidized, wet cardboard-like quality was apparent as well. The coffee notes were present but more subtle and more roasty than expected. As the beer warmed, the nose definitely improved. The coffee became smoother and punchier and the oxidation mellowed. A bit of sweetness also came forth. Some vanilla and dark chocolate notes were also detectable.
The flavor profile was similar to the aroma but rougher around the edges. Super roasty and quite acrid up front. Boozy notes kicked in next. I definitely tasted all 9%. Coffee notes were present but definitely more mellow than I anticipated. Both the roast and the alcohol intensified as the beer moved along the palate. Acrid, ashy notes lingered in the finish.
The mouthfeel was perhaps the most impressive aspect of the beer. It was medium bodied for the style and creamy, slick and smooth on the palate. The liquid contained a finer beaded, moderate effervescence that worked nicely.
I am usually a big fan of Trillium’s PM Dawn and its variants, but this beer was really disappointing. The roast was definitely excessive (I am not sure if this was from the malt profile or the coffee) and the booze was surprisingly prominent. Furthermore, the fruity notes one would typically get from a natural process coffee were completely lost on me.

Slow poured at the brewery. Thick, dense beige head. Surprisingly, only a few streaks appear after each sip. The liquid is dark brown where no light passes through the edge of the glass.
Strong coffee with a touch of Baker's chocolate smell.
Plenty of fresh brewed coffee to the taste. Creamy mouthfeel with fine carbonation, almost like nitro pour. Very bitter and nearly harsh -- definitely for coffee lovers.
