Shimmery, pitch black appearance. Slightly thinner in body than I anticipated. The liquid was topped by a small, creamy, saddle brown head that quickly transformed into a lasting ringlet. There was no lacing whatsoever.
The nose was outstanding. Super rich and boozy. Very port like. Raisin and plum notes came through big time. Loads of vanilla and brown sugar too. Caramel malts were also noticeable. This definitely had some English barleywine-like characteristics to it. As the beer warmed, the vanilla and the brown sugar intensified.
The flavor profile was just as stellar as the aroma. Super rich, robust and complex. Big malty notes led things off. Caramel malts were most prominent. Moderate dose of roasted malt character too. Boozy port notes kicked in hard as the beer moved along the palate. Huge dark fruit character. Raisins and plums for sure. There was a intense vanilla presence in the center. More booze and dark fruits on the back end and the finish. Some bourbon notes were detectable here as well.
The mouthfeel was super creamy and slick. Fuller bodied for the style but a touch thinner than anticipated given the super high ABV. The liquid contained a fine, moderate effervescence that worked nicely.
Although pastry stouts seem to be all the rage these days and I always love a good one, nothing excites me more than a straight-up barrel-aged imperial stout that fires on all cylinders. Permutation 8.01 Double Barrel Stout was one of the best examples of this I have tried in a very long time. This beer drinks like something between an imperial stout and an English barleywine, with both base beers being absolutely outstanding. I really hope that Trillium decides to bottle this someday, as I could imagine it drinking even better with a bit of age.

Deep, dark brown. No light passes. Darker beige head which settle to fine rim bubbles. Only a few spots/streaks as I sip away on this beer.
Strong, alcohol-laden sweet port-like aroma. This doesn't smell like a beer; it's hard to get to the stout aromas.
Rich bodied with a low carbonation level. The start of the taste offers a raisin-like flavor. LOTS of booze in the swallow. This may be the closest beer I've had to Sam Adams' Millennium--think Barley Wine - Brandy blend. The "Stout" aspects are largely missing or completely dominated. There's no chocolate or coffee flavors. The swallow and aftertaste is warming with prune and molasses flavors. Overall, this is an extreme beer that pushes the alcohol envelope.
