Drank from a 1 pint .9 fl oz (500ml) bottle purchased at Trillium Brewing Company, Boston, MA
Served in a tulip
The beer poured nearly full bodied and just slightly shy of pitch black. A touch murky looking perhaps. There was no true head, but swirls of froth topped the liquid. Tiny droplets trickled down the sides of the glass.
The aroma was outstanding. Fresh vanilla bean notes came through big time. Loads of dark chocolate too. Really sweet and pastry-like. Bourbon barrel notes were also quite prominent. There was a touch of cinnamon as well but less than I anticipated. Overall, the nose definitely nailed the chocolate covered churro concept.
The flavor profile was solid but somewhat less complex and less rounded than the nose. Malty up front. Roasted malts came through strongest. Bit of caramel malt sweetness too. Some dark chocolate was apparent as well. Brown sugar was noticeable in the center. Moderate amount of vanilla. Bourbon barrel notes came through big time as the beer moved along the palate and really intensified on the back end and in the finish. Quite boozy and slightly spicy. The vanilla notes became even more prominent as the beer warmed.
The mouthfeel was fuller bodied for the style but thinner than I anticipated given the beer’s high ABV. The liquid contained a zippier-than-average effervescence that seemed a bit aggressive for the style.
Barrel-Aged Chocolate Churro is an enjoyable beer with a fantastic nose and a boozier than expected flavor profile. I have no idea how “Vanuatu vanilla” differs from other varieties, but it definitely worked nicely in this beer.

Had on tap at Canton. Pours opaque, jet black with no head. Taste is chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla, and barrel. Super heavy, sweet, low carbonation. A decadent treat.
