In 2017 we introduced Affogato, a collaboration with J. Wakefield that would simultaneously launch our series of confectionary inspired stouts. Since then the Affogato family has grown with increasingly impactful iterations including Barrel Aged Affogato and most recently Doppio Affogato, released in celebration of our 10th anniversary in 2023.
Today with holiday markets in full swing at our Fort Point and Canton locations we proudly introduce the latest addition to the family tree, Barrel Aged Doppio Affogato.
Presenting a viscous pitch-black, Barrel Aged Doppio Affagato is decadent and palate-coating. We perceive aromas of vanilla cream, fresh-pulled espresso, rich dark chocolate, and pronounced, oaky bourbon. Boasting a full, satisfying body and an indulgent finish, this is a notable and highly limited addition to our dessert series, ready to savor this holiday season.

Drank from an 11.2 fl oz (330 ml) bottle purchased at Trillium Brewing Company, Boston, MA
Served in a tulip
The beer poured a super oily and viscous, complete pitch black hue. With a fairly aggressive pour, a creamy and dense, half-inch tall, bunt umber colored crown rose above the body. The heady quickly broke into a frothy, resilient collar. After each sip, tiny dots of lacing trickled down the glass.
The aroma was absolutely incredible and definitely reminded me of a boozy affogato. It was sweet and decadent but still remarkably well balanced. Vanilla spiked espresso notes dominated. Fresh vanilla bean specifically came to mind. Perhaps some vanilla ice cream as well. There was an intense dark chocolate syrup presence too. Boozy bourbon notes were also apparent. The barrel character was rather subtle however, though I hardly missed it.
The flavor profile was also impressive but not quite as smooth or as enjoyable as the nose. Big malt presence up front. Roasted and caramel malt notes were apparent. Espresso emerged as the coffee moved along the palate. Some dark chocolate syrup was noticeable in the center. Boozy bourbon notes appeared here as well and carried into the back end. The finish contained more roasted malt character, bitter espresso and oaky barrel.
The mouthfeel was solid but somewhat thinner than I anticipated. It was medium-full bodied for the style. Creamy and smooth on the palate. The liquid contained a fine, moderate effervescence that fluffed up nicely.
Affogato and Barrel-Aged Affogato are two of my favorite Trillium beers ever, and this “Doppio” rendition was possibly even better. Although the barrel character on this was somewhat subdued, the espresso, vanilla and chocolate notes were remarkable.

Brewers notes: BA Doppio Affogato leads with an assertive notes of freshly baked brownies, vanilla icing, sticky toffee chocolate on the nose followed by vanilla bean, espresso and molasses on the palate. Chilled bottle poured into a pretentious beer glass creates a thick brown motor oil with a two finger dense foam cap
Faint bourbon aroma , hint of espresso
Taste is chocolate brownie batter, dark chocolate, espresso beans
Mouthfeel is smooth, an espresso bitterness lingers on the back of the tongue
Good beer

2024 vintage.
S -- Dark roast coffee, vanilla, nougat, dried dark fruit, toffee, caramel. Not much overt barrel character
T -- Barrel shines through more here. They do achieve a nice interplay between roasty coffee and melted vanilla ice cream. Not overly sweet, which is always nice with these high gravity pastry stouts
F -- High point of this beer. Velvety, viscous, smooth. Not syrupy or gloopy
O -- Not sure whether this really improves on the "regular" BA Affogato, but these variants remain some of Trillium's stronger offerings

11.2 oz bottle
Pours pitch black with a small light brown foam head. Smells like deep dark chocolate, sweet marshmallow cream, fresh vanilla beans, gelato, affogato, rich caramel, toffee, toasty brown sugar, maple, espresso coffee, dark roasted malts, oaky bourbon barrel, with mild earthy hops. Tastes like rich sweet dark chocolate, marshmallow cream, fresh vanilla beans, lactose, gelato ice cream, rich caramel, toffee, toasty brown sugar, slight maple, graham cracker, oaky bourbon barrel, espresso coffee, affogato, dark roasted malts, with mild earthy hops. Feels medium plus bodied, thick, viscous, with smooth moderate low carbonation. Overall a real nice bourbon barrel aged affogato imperial stout.
