650ml bottle. The next in line from the nascent Calgary-located operations of this normally Wisconsin-oriented brewery. The tasting notes on the label seem to have been concocted by someone with a sub-grade school education.

This beer pours a clear, medium copper amber colour, with a teeming amount of either bottle-conditioned bullshit or ineptly infected fizzy, puffy, and overwrought foamy off-white head, which leaves some commensurately chunky swaths of streaky lace around the glass as it takes a stupid amount of time to abate, particularly for the purported style.

It smells of semi-sweet grainy, lightly bready caramel malt, a weirdly strong aerosol black pepper spiciness, weak black fruit notes, and muted leafy, earthy hops. The taste is somewhat biscuity caramel malt, sharp and indistinct citrus fruit rind, a touch of leafy pine cone astringency, a hard water sandstone flintiness, subtle dead and dry yeast, and further soft earthy, weedy hop notes.

The carbonation is quite the story here - an inappropriate mess of misplaced, um, visual beauty, the kind where you can appreciate it just fine, but really wish that it would get on with it for other more pressing reasons, the body medium-light in weight, and more or less smooth, the hops and yeast not all that intrusive, sigh. It finishes barely off-dry, the low-brow bready caramel malt still tangling with the latent out-of-place yeast, and the hops attaining a sort of airy, non-corporeal bitterness.

Not the worst Canadian-made red ale that I've yet encountered, but perhaps the most poorly presented one - what the fuck is with the Belgian-style saison bubbles? Sure, they're pretty and all, but hardly appropriate here - I don't have the patience for this sort of wankery, especially when it seems all the more lazy and enduring, when all I want to do is get to the beer underneath. I seem to have run out of better words, but since my most recent (and yet duly careful) top-up still has three unmoving fingers of nose-dipping head, Imma just gonna have to call this an unfortunate marketing and brewing fail.
