This new double IPA from Bent Water out of Lynn is exciting because it's their first (canned) DIPA and also because it features Waimea hops, a very underutilized varietal with intense citrus character and a huge oil content. This particular can comes from the beer's first canning run, which was 2/23/17, less than a week ago! Fresh as hell!
Pours a nice, bright golden color with an intense head of bone-white foam that leaves behind strict and controlled lace in tiers. The body of the beer is mildly hazy, but light can be seen filtering through it quite readily. The surface is lightly hazed over as well, with some packed micro-bubbles providing some stable legs for the head and its solid retention.
Nose is intensely forward with pineapple, tangelo, fruit gum, mango and grapefruit notes, followed by a light, crisp and airy malt backing that peeks out ever-so-slightly. Loving the juicy citrus notes this has. It's not really as dank or earthy/green-smelling as some more "East Coast" IPAs these days, but it's also in no way, shape or form "piney" or sticky like a West Coast IPA. Must be the Galaxy/Waimea flexing here in a big way.
On the palate, this feels slick and oily, though surprisingly airy as I expected it to from the nose. There's something ephemeral about this hop combo that really works in the nose, but it feels less solid on the tongue. Almost too lightly-flavored, with only a vague malt backbone even attempting to balance the whole package. There's a firm and heady bitterness that comes across towards the finish, but the mid-palate is drowning in hop oil that brings out flavors ranging from the juicy citrus and tropical fruits to the slightly rind-like with some tangerine peel and grapefruit elements. Almost wish it were a little heavier bodied with a less fleeting flavor profile. The good thing about this is that it drinks pretty easily and only slightly stronger than a single IPA. The feel could be improved a bit, for sure, but I love the explosive and unique nose on this. It could translate to the tongue a little bit better; if they nailed that on the next run, this would be a sleeper hit in many ways.
