Black with nut-brown pillowy head. Good retention and lacing. Lots of sweet aroma, coffee candy, chocolate cherry, pudding. Light chocolate pudding flavor with a slight bitter coffee finish, and red fruit notes. College and refreshing like the root beer in an ice cream float.

Not sure who is naming this brewery's beers on BA but mine seems to be clearly labeled as X-Series, Chocolate Milk Stout, X-15; canned on 2/10/17; a little thin for the style but my bigger issue is that a subtle roasty bitterness overtakes the smoothness and chocolate flavor

As I've mentioned in some previous reviews, I haven't had too many of these X-series beers, but I kind of like that they're easily obtainable and show a desire to work outside of "rotating" and "seasonal" styles by being released in six-packs. This is a decent effort in the series, but it's still not quite good enough to justify an entire six pack purchase.

Pours a very nice dark brown that very closely borders the edge of blackness. A two-finger head of mocha foam erupts into being atop the beer, with a surface that clears evenly, Lace is surprisingly nice with some puffs of foam sticking around here and there. Good retention on the head here. Overall, looks pretty damn nice in my glass.

Nose is mostly chocolate; powdery and slightly-bittersweet with some milky undertones of sweet cream. Makes sense. There's a bit of a slight roast undertone as well as a slight herbal hop note and light licorice here and there. I get an element of dark fruit too; kind of reminds me of prune/plum in a sense, but I really have to search under the layers of chocolate.

Flavor is a bit more interesting than initially expected, but it is also a touch strange as well. I get some notes of cherry and plum that distract from the chocolate-milk flavor this is definitely going for. The milky flavor is solid, but the mid-palate feels too fruit/ester forward and not dry enough. There's very little roast or caramel notes, for instance, making this come off somewhat sweet even before the finish, where the milk sugar takes hold. Kind of unsatisfying flavor profile here.

Feel is, as expected, very smooth bodied and easy-drinking, but the flavor profile is what's really turning me off here. The carbonation is even-handed, especially earlier on in the can, before the beer warms to room temperature. The finish lingers a little bit, but the sweetness started to get to me at this point. Without much balancing roast or hoppiness, this felt a bit under-par. Still worth giving a shot to, and I liked the pour a lot.
