Chocolate... hefeweizen? Now, that's a weird idea. Is it gonna be more like a dunkelweizen? A chocolate-flavored hefe that's still light in color? Will it taste like a chocolate-covered banana? I have so many questions. This is definitely one of the weirdest ideas BW has done for their X-Series, and I'm more than happy to be a guinea pig.

Pour is, well... terrifying. This is a darker-than-black stout pour if I've ever seen one, with an opaque dark-brown body bearing a fuzzy mocha head that tapers down to about a half-finger after five or so minutes in my glass. Slight soapy lace show, too. I did not expect this dark of a beer, and the lack of filtration certainly makes things more intense as well. Off to a pretty cool start here. I love when my expectations for a beer are turned upside down...

The nose here is... hm, how do I put this? I guess you could say that, at first brush, this pretty much smells like a chocolate stout. I get the requisite deep roast and cocoa notes combined with slight coffee, caramel and English toffee... however, after a few minutes this opens up and I start to pick up clove-like phenolics, likely from the Hefeweizen yeast. Pretty impressive evolution on the nose, but, at the same time, my mind wants to automatically equate this with a dunkelweizen considering the similarities. The chocolate element is too strong for me to really do so adequately, though, so I end up just being kind of confused. It doesn't gel together as well as it probably did in the brewers' heads, but let's see how the flavor works out.

Flavor is round and smooth with a very chocolate-forward profile which nevertheless does make some room for hefty roast and wheat-like nuttiness. Clove and light banana-like Hefe esters come out as it sips. Honestly, this kind of reminds me of a less dialed-in version of their peanut butter porter, Boris. Granted, it's lacking the "peanut butter" flavor, but the yeast brings out some complex spice that feels somewhat analogous if I don't think about it too much, and the overall body is fairly similar.

Comparing the feel to Boris is no accident, as this drinks almost exactly like said beer, which I really liked. In fact, I think Boris is likely the best BW beer I've had to date, and since this beer goes down similarly I'd have to give this equivalent marks for feel. "Smooth yet slick" is pretty applicable here, with a heavier-than-expected body and a moderate carbonation. This is one of the better BW X-Series beers in a while, and surprised me in some ways. I'm not sure I'd really want a whole lot more of it, but it's worthy of some consideration for what that's worth.
