Poured from a can into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown, nearly black color with a small head of brown colored foam. The head has a good level of retention, fading over time and leaving sticky lace on the sides of the glass. Swirling the brew in the snifter shows its thick consistency, with thick fingers of brew clinging to the sides of the glass and slowly receding to the base of the vessel.
Smell – The smell is enormous of a roasty and toasty malt smell mixed with tons of chocolate and a bit of coffee. Along with these smells comes a good showing of sweet smells with notes of caramel, toffee, and molasses, along with big milk chocolate and brown sugar paired with a bit of vanilla and crème. Other aromas of a light warming bourbon and woody smell are there as well, and with notes of cola and raisin, producing an almost lightly boozy like brownie smell.
Taste – The taste begins less sweet than I was anticipating form the nose. It starts with a heavy roasted malt flavor mixed with a good deal of bitter coffee and dark chocolate. While not too sweet, there are notes of brown sugar and molasses, along with some light vanilla tastes. There are other char and woody tastes upfront, which get slightly stronger as the taste advances, mostly at the expense of some of the sweet initially, only for the sweet to come back stronger more toward the end, with some additional brown sugar and vanilla coming on. The bourbon is light upfront, but gets stronger as the taste advances and brings with it some warming alcohol to the tongue. Toward the end, notes of additional char and toast, as well as more woody tastes join in, leaving one with a robust and dark warming taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – As anticipated from the look, the body of the brew is thick and coating with a very low carbonation level. For the big, dark, and boozy tastes the feel is fantastic, making for one very slow sipping brew.
Overall – A well-crafted imperial stout with big roastiness and warming booze, but with out a overwhelming amount of sweet.
