Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a deep brown, nearly black color with a one finger head of tan colored foam. The head fades rather fast leaving just a trace of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is a nice mix of oats and coffee with a moderate smell of cocoa nibs and some caramel. Along with these aromas comes a bit of toast and toffee as well as a little bit of a creamy latte like smell.
Taste – The taste is less sweet than I was anticipating, beginning strong with a cocoa and roasted malt flavor that is matched with plenty of smooth oatmeal. There is a little bit of a sweeter milk chocolate and caramel in there as well, with these flavors fading as the taste advances on the tongue further. At the same time a touch of char and more oatmeal come in at the end, and with some light nuttiness as well as a touch of toast, one is left with a smooth coffee oatmeal taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is medium in thickness and chewiness with a lower carbonation level. The low carbonation was great for the style, but I would have liked it a little thicker and chewier, better matching the very oaty taste of the brew. Overall, however, the feel was pretty good.
Overall – A rather nice, not overly sweet, oatmeal coffee porter. A nice cooler weather brew that is well worth the try if you have the chance.
