This is a review of the 2018 batch. It has a nice roasted flavor with a touch of sweetness. The sweet has characteristics of turbinado sugar, not refined white sugar, but less carmelized then brown sugar and no notes of tart like cherry or currant.

50cl pression served in a Grim chalice Au Dauphin (in the capital of Christmas). Huge head, just like it’s supposed to have. Rich and sweet and caramel and, well, it’s how I think a dubbel should be. Freaking awesome. Crap! I ordered choucroute for dinner and this won’t go with that! Well, screw it! I’m having another!

Bottle picked up in French supermarket. Nice Belgian ale, dark brown with almost no head. Aroma is sour and dried fruit. Taste is prunes, caramel, malt. Average....

Clear brown-reddish color with beige head. Aroma has dark sugar and tart cherries. Taste starts sweet with dark sugar and dried dark fruits. Medium-light body with high carbonation. Nothing really special.

Ruby brown with pocked sandstone foam that fades fast. 3.75
Dried fig, sherry, and clove nose - a bit cardboardy. 3.25
Lots of brown candy sugar up front, some caramel pear, red currants, ginger candy, and some papery phenols. 3.5
Cream soda end and numbing linger.
Medium, sticky, round. 4

So sweet my teeth hurt. Really nothing in the way of hops or spicy yeast (though it is 6 months old) to restrain all the dark sugar, or even fruit to give it dimension. I could drink it by the fire, but there are others I'd much rather drink. 3.5

Beer on tap (33cl.), tasted in dec. 2007 (with my climbing friends).

Appearance: red-copper color, with a tan foam head (low effervescence).
Smell : slightly spicy aromas.
Taste and mouthfeel : caramel malt and spicy. balance between sweetness and bitterness, slightly sweet in finish.
Drinkability: a good Christmas beer in the style Belgian Dubbel
