Lion’s Tail Brewing Co. – Märzen / Oktoberfest Lager
Appearance – 3.25
Pours a clear light amber to deep gold, roughly SRM 9–10, which is stylistically acceptable but on the lighter end for a Märzen. Less copper than expected. Moderate carbonation with a short-lived white head that fades quickly, leaving minimal lacing. Clean, but visually understated.
Aroma – 3.75
Noble hops are more expressive than expected for the style, with Hallertau Mittelfrüh clearly present. Malt-forward aromas of Munich and light caramel come through, supported by a clean lager yeast profile. Subtle sweetness without becoming bready or heavy.
Flavor – 4.0
Balanced and well-developed, especially compared to earlier tastings. Caramel sweetness and toasted Munich malt lead, followed by a gentle roasted note and a faint honey-like linger. Bitterness is restrained but effective, providing structure without disrupting the malt focus. Noble hops surface mid-palate to keep things crisp and refreshing. Clean fermentation profile throughout.
Mouthfeel – 3.5
Medium-bodied but not heavy. Carbonation is sufficient and keeps the beer lively without bite. Smooth and rounder than earlier impressions, finishing clean and encouraging repeat sips.
Overall – 3.75
This Märzen clearly benefited from time. Earlier impressions found it thin and muted, but revisiting it in January revealed a beer that had come into balance and expression. At 5.6% ABV (low end for the style), it drinks easily and showcases a clean lager character with well-integrated malt sweetness and noble hop balance. While the appearance lacks some classic Märzen richness, the flavor and drinkability make up for it. A solid, smooth Oktoberfest lager that rewards patience.
