16oz draft
Pours about a finger of off white head into a nonic. Body is a cloudy light brown with some cream hues from whatever is in suspension. Head dissipates in a normal amount of time, but has left an obviously good initial lacing. Body is uncharacteristically cloudy, but who cares, looks fine so far.
Nose is hoppy, some sharp piney notes. A relatively forward jammy presence, though not gross at all. Light caramel notes. Smells really really nice, there is a lot going on. Not really a traditional brown base (even when taking into account the heavy hop addition), but I happen to know that this beer was intended to be a red and just turned out a little darker so they marketed it as a brown. Great aroma either way.
Flavor is not quite as deep as the aroma. I have had this before and the nose certainly steals the show. Hop bitterness is moderate, but seems to linger somewhat in the background for the duration of the palate, not much flavor contribution in the tradition sense, though the light fruit notes are likely from the hops. Fruit notes are jam esque, but again, not as full as on the flavor. Not very sweet at all on the flavor. Bitterness is the dominant attribute here, but I find myself thinking it's in the background because it is still not as big as on the aroma. Good flavor, but not as deep as on the aroma.
Mouthfeel is quite nice. Very thick, which I always associate with all the cloudiness. Certainly suspended particles makes a beer heavier in your mouth, right? Carbonation is about medium, and supports the beer well. Bitterness is present, but does not linger poorly after the finish.
Drinkability is very high. Not a boozy beer, but crushable for a hoppy brown.
The appearance turned out decent. Lacing was ok, a little patchy though.
Overall a good brew. Nose in certainly impressive. Flavor misses in some areas, but does carry some of the solid notes from the smell.
