Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass with a half finger dark khaki head with good retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, chocolate malted milk balls, vanilla and faint cinnamon. Flavor follows with dark toasted malt with moderate char, vanilla, chocolate malted milk and a hint of cinnamon I'd have missed if I hadn't seen it mentioned on the can. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. A pleasant, well roasted American style stout with good vanilla and light chocolate notes. I'm not quite getting the pastry stout feel; the malt is a bit light for that style and the char character is odd for a pastry (although it is fine and welcomed in a stout). However, this is a quite nice vanilla stout. I liked the malted milk and chocolate combination. A bit mellow, but well balanced with the cinnamon nicely restrained letting the malt and vanilla shine. A good introduction to this brewery. The cake in a can imagery on the can was intriguing.
