Lower Forge Brewery "Main Street IPA"
On tap at the brewery on 17 February 2018
Notes: Wet hopped with local Shamong hops: Cascade & Chinook. 5.9% ABV, 82 IBUs. Clear deep amber/copper body beneath a short head of white that falls to a creamy cap but leaves some nice thin lacing about the glass as it goes. The aroma is malty, grainy, with a hint of caramel and very little hops... but there are some in the flavor. There's a hint of pine and a drip of citrus but, again, it's not that hoppy. Sweetish and malty overall. 82 IBUs??? I'd have to see that tested as it doesn't seem to be that high. So what to think? At 5.9% it's strong enough to be an American IPA, but it also fits into the American pale ale range, and given the intensity of the hops that are there (especially in the aroma), and the questionable bitterness (keep in mind these hops are most likely not tested for alpha acid) , I'd call it a pale ale. But I will say I enjoyed it, and I wanted to have another but I didn't have time. Hopefully they'll do it again next year and get a little more hop character into it.
