Served on tap in a snifter
Appearance – The beer is served a super dark brown, nearly black color with a one finger head of brown colored foam. The head has a decent level of retention, fading over time to leave some sticky lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strong of a sweet milk chocolate and molasses smell mixed with a nice roasted malt and light coffee aroma. Along with these aromas comes a other light and sweet aromas of some dark fruit (plum and raisin) as well as a bit of vanilla.
Taste – The taste begins less sweet (but still somewhat sweet) then I would have anticipated from the nose. The taste begins with a roasty and rich dark malt taste with a hint of coffee and a good showing of cocoa. These dark tastes are accentuated by flavors of brown sugar and molasses as well as a bit of dark fruit (mostly raisin). As the taste advances the sweetness grows a bit all while the roast fades a bit. Some lighter alcohol tastes as well as a bit of smoke come at the very end, and leave one with a rather dark and slightly sweet taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is creamy with a carbonation that is average. Overall the feel was rather appropriate for the style and made for a nice slow sipper.
Overall – A nice “basic” and easy drinking imperial stout. Not the best but certainly enjoyable. It doesn’t have barrel aging, lactose, marshmallows, everything but the kitchen sink thrown in,… but I like that. More back to the roots style and very easy drinking.
