On draft at the brewery, it pours pitch black color with a small tan head that faded slowly and left minimal spotty lacing.
Smells of toasted grains, cocoa powder, piney hops, grapefruit, charred wood, floral hops, lemon zest, light char and smoked malts. Well balanced with nice roasty notes and pungent hoppy aromas, just how I like a black IPA.
Tastes like it smells with the addition of pineapple and more citrus hops like orange peel, then burnt coffee grinds, brown sugar and dry wheat crackers. The smoky notes cut down the hoppy sweetness and helps this go down with a medium level of bitterness, a thin mouthfeel and a dry ashy finish.

A: murky light black/ dark brown in color. Head is thin and tan
S: roasted malts, big pineapple, orange zest, mango, strawberries, rubber, crackers, and a hint of chocolate. Smells real nice
T: pineapple, bitter grapefruit, orange rind, and cocoa upfront. Smooth roasted malts and strawberries behind that. A little bit of earthy hops to close it out. Awesome Black IPA
M: medium mouth, almost silky. Medium-high carbonation
O: awesome beer. Under appreciated style in my mind. Great blend of citrus hops and roasted malts

I had this on draught at the brewery. 12 oz. pour. It pours a dark walnut with a finger of khaki-colored head and lacing. The head dissipated quickly but the lacing remained for the full pour. It has a nice nose with distinct pineapple and chocolate, along with roasted malt, and fragrant hops. The taste is really interesting. I note the pineapple right away, along with roasted malt, wheat, chocolate, and smoky peat. All the flavors blend nicely. This ale has a nice smooth body with moderate carbonation, and its 7.1% ABV gives it nice substance. Overall, I like the idea of pineapple purée in a Black IPA and Twin Elephant has really pulled it off. This is an excellent offering.

On-tap @ Twin Elephant Brewing Co. in Chatham, NJ.
This is a Black IPA conditioned on pineapple. Pours a murky, dark brown, almost black color with an off-white head. Aroma bursts with tropical fruit with mild dark chocolate and a hint of smoke in the background. Dark chocolate is more noticeable in the flavor, but make no mistake, this beer is all about the hops. The pineapple is there occasionally, but I wouldn't pick it out over some other tropical fruits. Very bitter in the aftertaste, a bit unbalanced. An interesting beer. Pretty enjoyable, but I probably should have opted for an 8 oz pour instead of a full pint.
