Welcome back to my Happy New Summer in the Dark with a Beer in the City Sunday (Week 757)!
This Summer was time well spent here at Chez Woody, allowing me to winnow through the backlog & assemble lots of brewery horizontals for each week's NBS. For insCANce, this week's foray into Asbury Park, NJ's Dark City B.C., including this beer as a part of The CANQuest (tm).
From the CAN: "Hoppy Wheat w/Citra & Mandarina Bavaria"; "Unfiltered. Store Cold. Drink Fresh."
I did some in-CAN agitation before the Crack! of the vent for a couple of reasons - 1) It was wheat-based & 2) it was unfiltered. Hey, if clarity is not a CANcern, then I'm going for whatever I get. These guys were early & frequent CANtributors to my Bag o' Shame - CANs that exploded before I could get to them. Now, their beers get priority placement in my crowded reefer, hence my desire to drink 'em up. This time, I got some massive foaming following the Glug, forming two-plus fingers of foamy, soapy, rocky, eggshell-white head with good retention. Color was a lightly-cloudy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5). Nose smelled like liquefied fruit salad! I might need to buy some for my lunchbox, having been so inspired. Kinda tropical, but also sorta citrusy. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. This one REALLY worked! The tang of the wheat worked well with the Citra hops to give it a pronounced grapefruit tanginess, underlain by the sweeter tropical fruits like mango & pineapple. Mmm. Finish was semi-dry to dry, but highly refreshing & very pleasant. I wish that I could trust their CANs not to be little grenades, but since I CAN't, it is tough to envision filling my beach-bound cooler with them. 8=( YMMV.

16 oz can poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.
Appearance
Extra hazy golden-blonde. Lively carbonation. Explosive creamy head.
Nose
Lemon, wheat, tangerine, and clementine.
Taste
Tangy wheat and lemon. Tangerine, clementine, and dried peach. Chalky bitterness and Juicy Fruit gum. Some barnyard funk.
Mouthfeel
Medium bodied, silky, crisp, creamy, and moderately bitter.
Overall
Has a funkiness and a bitterness that I don't feel should be there.

This is a hazy and heady hoppy wheat ale with a very moderate bitterness level overall but still more hoppy than your normal wheat beer. Citrus and pine on the nose and a nice balanced flavor profile. Big carbonation kick on the tongue!

Dark City Brewing Co. "Double Dry Hopped Placemaker"
1 Pint can, coded "NEW LOOK, WHO DIS? 3/012018" and sampled on 4/27/2018
$4.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Wow, nice sunny golden orange color. Definitely cloudy, it looks like a glass of light colored orange juice. Nice fluffy bright white head. Nice appearance. The aroma is citrusy and a little bit earthy. I'm thinking orange, lemon, light grapefruit, and pineapple. What's in here? Citra, Mandaria Bavaria, and El Dorado... that makes sense. Not surprisingly the flavor follows with some additional lime and lychee. There's some nice, lightly sweetish wheat malt there as well. It's not too wheaty, and I guess they've got that balanced with some pilsner malt. I'm getting some grassy and piney notes in the finish as well. As might be expected it's not that bitter, but it's not out of balance, and there is some "hop burn". As far as "juicy" beers go it looks like they've got that covered. It's light-medium in body and gently bristling on the tongue. Overall I have to say nicely done. One of the better juicy ales I've had lately.
