Welcome back to my Happy New Summer in the Dark with a Beer in the City Sunday (Week 757)!
This Summer was time well spent here at Chez Woody, allowing me to winnow through the backlog & assemble lots of brewery horizontals for each week's NBS. For insCANce, this week's foray into Asbury Park, NJ's Dark City B.C., including this beer as a part of The CANQuest (tm).
From the CAN: "India Pale Ale w/Mango & Pineapple".
Once again, they seemed to have seen the light & gone with a CANtract brewery. It mentioned nothing about "unfiltered", but knowing that such is the brewery's m.o., I Crack!ed open the vent & beCAN a slow, gentle C-Line Glug. I was rewarded with the quick formation of two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with very good retention. Color was an oh-so-slightly hazy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5). You might think that the nose would be that of a tropical fruit salad, but that would be wrong-headed. Certainly, I got mango & pineapple, but there was also a pronounced grapefruit citrusiness keeping the sweetness in check. Now, my mouth was watering unCANtrollably. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. The taste initially really surprised me with its pineapple intensity! I almost coughed, but recovered quickly. Oh, man, this tasted SO good after all of the prelude beers today! It was initially solid pineapple, but once the shock wore off, I beCAN to get the mango & grapefruit flavors. Mmm. Finish was dry, definitely hop-driven & I would be absolutely willing to take a ChANce on in filling my beach-bound cooler. Just keep reloading the ice. YMMV.

I think this was my first beer from Dark City and its a Very good IPA, good color, clear with a white head. The fruit is there but not overpowering and it has a nice mango aftertaste.
