Received from @r0rschach post NBS BIF 10 – Thanks John! Reviewed 2/20/20.
Undated 16 oz can. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 55 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.
First pour – Brown, clear.
Body – Brown/black, opaque. When held to direct light, deep red but still opaque.
Head – Average (Maximum 2.8 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, low density, short retention, diminishing to a two mm crown and a thin partial cap.
Lacing – None – not surprising at 11.5% ABV.
Aroma – 3 – Faint dates, faint smoke (peat?)
Flavor – 4. 5. Begins slightly sweet, much like a Belgian quad with some dates and a hint of cherry. Lacks the maltiness of a Scotch ale/wee heavy. The bourbon is distinctly present but is much kinder and gentler than in most BBA brews. No alcohol (11.5 % ABV according to the website) flavor or aroma although a fireball explodes in the stomach but quickly dies down. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.75 – Full, almost syrupy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 (Minus 0.25 point for an undated can) Unremarkable appearance and aroma. The flavor is exceptional and works well with the palate.
