Got to try Kennebec's Penobscot Porter at the Extreme Beer Fest in 2013, and I was more than pleasantly surprised to have a great chocolate beer! I wasn't expecting it at all, but I had to try it twice to make sure! :) My only regret is that I didn't steal their keg...I've been looking for this brew ever since.

This porter is awesome. If you are not into chocolate, do not let that deter you. The liquor characteristic blends in with the chocolate very nicely. If you visit this brewery, definitely try this one.

Served on tap in a mason jar (a little to hipster for an inn in the woods, but I guess it speaks to the perpetually quaint nature of backwoods maine). Really good smell and taste (hints of chocolate and coffee). Was really good with a bbq bacon cheeseburger. Drink it slow and enjoy every sip.

Served at the 3rd Annual Great International Spring Beer Festival, Providence, RI.
A..Nice and dark. No real head to speak of, but perhaps that was because of the setting and little plastic cup.
S..Inviting porter. The malt is there, but is subtle.
T..Very good tasting porter. Strong and hearty roasted malt presence. Delicious with a slight sweetness near the end. This is how porters should taste.
M..Nice medium/full bodied beer. Carbonation level seemed low, which is a positive in my opinion.
D..Easy to drink for a porter. A bit crisp at the beginning but mellows nice as it goes down. Worth a try.

Really nice Porter from a really cool place. The Kennebec River Brewery at the Northern Outdoors rafting lodge is a great location for some really good beers. After a day of death defying class 4-5 rapids on the Dead River nothing could have tasted better than this dark beauty. Served in a Ball mason jar (very nice) the appearance was very dark. Smell of roasted malts and deliciousness. Tasted like what I wish all porters strived for...robust roasted malty with a slight sweetness. Really enjoyed this offering.
Would highly recommend stopping in for a jar (if you happen to be wayout in the middle of the woods in Maine)! The bar is tiny but the lodge atmosphere is very nice.
The perfect companion for a rafting and camping trip is definetly a brewery on site!!

At the Kennebec River Brewpub.
Pours an opaque dark brown with a creamy tan head. Smell is roasty, sweet, dark malt. More sweet and creamy than bitter.
Taste's a bit like a latte. Sweet dark malt, hints of coffee and heavy on the milky/creamy flavors. Milk chocolatey vs bitter chocolatey. Creamy mouth with a light but persistent roasted smokey aftertaste. Good stuff, not too heavy or strong. A good session porter.

This is a strong porter worthy of the coming season. The dark thick color wafts a smoky aroma with hints of roast. A solid body supports the smokiness of the malts and leads into the aggressively bitter finish.
