16-ounce can purchased from ABV Public House in Hillsboro, OR. Looks like the canning date is 07/10/2020. (Date stamp also reads: BLACK LIVES MATTER.) Poured into a tulip-style half pint glass.
Look:
Very dark brown with muddy amber highlights. Head of creamy tan foam which dissipates quickly. Beer clings to the glass and looks somewhat viscous.
Smell:
Vanilla and brown sugar dominate, along with alcohol and a harsh spicy/chemical note. There is also a Clif Bar smell comprised of oats and a little chocolate, which is nice.
Taste:
The spicy/chemical note comes across as a sort of nutmeg/licorice flavor at the beginning, pungent and unwelcome. A strong vanilla flavor follows and hangs on to the end. Underneath that is a layer of chocolate-covered graham crackers. The finish is mocha, a little caramel, and lots of alcohol flavor. Too sweet for me, but I can't ding the beer for that, because what else should I expect from an "Oatmeal Cookie Imperial Stout"?
Feel:
Body is full-bodied, rich, and creamy. This is easily my favorite aspect of the beer. Unfortunately, the rich body is undermined by prickly carbonation and prominent alcohol which burns and then numbs.
Overall:
I like oatmeal cookies. I like imperial stout. But this "Oatmeal Cookie Imperial Stout" is a rough drink. The positives (nice oats and brown sugar in the aroma, some chocolate graham cracker flavors) are overwhelmed by harsh elements in the nose, taste, and mouthfeel. I'd almost recommend aging this beer because it's a spiky, untamed mess right now, but I'm not sure there's enough good points here to make it worth the wait.
