havent had nearly enough from these guys and its been cool to see them come around a little bit more lately, this is a solid dark lager, a little darker and more complex i think than the standard european dark, but not quite really a schwarzbier either, a nice recipe either way that fits deep winter pretty well and brings a lot of flavor while staying drinkable, my colleague and i both really dug this yesterday afternoon on tap. looks porter-esque, has a stocky tan head an inch or even taller, and stays airy and peaky the whole drink, no real red to this, definitely darker in color than the standard chestnut range. the nose has subtle yeast to it, lager for sure, a little generic but it comes through the deeper malt profile. aroma and flavor of black fig, a little raisin-like fruitiness there, pipe tobacco, dark leather, and unsweetened cocoa, even that sweet and bitter molasses thing hitting as it warms, some light european grain character too, bready, toasty, mineral forward, sweeter chocolate linger after the swallow, but not overly bitter to finish, nice flow overall. pleasant linger, a hint of black tea, and a bit more body than a lot of these have without really being heavy, even some hops coming out as it warms which is less conventional too. solid offering, ideal for this time of year, very well constructed. probably just as good in the morning, despite the name...
