a really interesting beer that comes to me highly recommended. my first from these guys, a special release from what i understand. its a curious brew, murky amber colored from the bottle with a fast settling head and looking sort of lifeless after that. the nose is really complex though, dried red fruit, acidic tang, musty wood, wet animal, lacto, new oak, red apple, iodine, honey, and smoke. i did not expect this to be a smoke beer, so that element kind of threw me off, i have to assume its intentional, i like it more in the flavor than the nose, especially as it warms. it works with all the wood thats on this. the brett is weird to me, not developed enough despite the time in the barrel, and im not in love with the profile, its a little sloppy and less refined than i like this sort of thing to be. notes of red wine and raisin and tobacco here, but the beer isnt as heavy as its autumnal flavor profile somehow. it definitely needs more carbonation though, the stillness is the worst aspect of this, and it makes the whole thing sag for me. i am interested in others from these guys, i like the farm brewery thing and the agricultural aspect of this, but this particular beer did not impress us the way we hoped it would. perhaps more time in the bottle is needed for the yeasts to develop and clean this up. i hope to find out if that is in fact the case...
