my least favorite of the three beers i had in here this week, a decent porter but a little amateurish to me and kind of flat overall, a bit one dimensional and old school not quite as robust as i think it could be, but not a bad offering. satin luster medium dark brown with a very short and fast fading off white ring on top, still in no time. a little density to this, notes of chocolate and molasses to me in the nose, it kind of all hits at once, shows a bit sweet, nothing really from the ferment, quite simple as they go, roasty but without the bitterness a more prominent dark barley addition might provide, and definitely drinks as much like a brown ale as a porter, some dark cocoa to it but not into that espresso black realm, and sweetness wins the day, brown sugar and a hint of maple to me, dark bread too, some decent grain layers in this, and its long and smooth on the palate. it could use some more carbonation and perhaps to have been fermented down a little drier, but this keeps it kind of hearty for cooler weather i suppose. tastes pretty standard overall, nothing off about it, but kind of uninspired and uninspiring. some older school types of beers in here, certainly not quite competitive in overall quality or sex appeal with the best of the region, but i liked this well enough and had a great time checking the place out.
