473 ml can served cool into a snifter. Canned February 15, 2023. LCBO purchase for $4.75 CDN.
Appearance - Dark auburn color, a finger of loose tan head that fizzles away in a couple of minutes leaving a soapy residue.
Smell - Lots of pine, some caramel and a touch of citrus. Not the biggest nose, but pretty solid.
Taste - Some pine, fairly bitter but not overdone, solid grainy backbone too. Solid, but lacking in intensity a bit for a 8.5% ABV.
Mouthfeel - Medium-full body, carbonation is light but not syrupy, in fact more watery than most in this style.
Overall - Decent DIPA, not outstanding, despite this being only a month old, there is a bit of a lack of intensity.

Poured a Sept can into a tulip so a but old I know. An amber pour with thin collar doesnt offer much in terms of IPA look. Heavy pine forward nose and sawdust finish. Not citrusy here. Taste is strong hop, full, bitter finish. Had some decent ones from Exchange but this is not up there sadly.

Several glass on tap at the brewery poured into a tulip glass.
A: Small White soapy head sits atop a clear orange amber body with light tones of copper.
S: Lots of floral and resinous hops and then some lemon and what I would describe as funk.
T: You do get very light layers of citrus fruit, some lemon, grass, and a floral note then it turns into a funky almost fruity bomb. It has a very interesting and unique flavor.
M: Medium bodied leaning toward clingy with average carbonation.
O: What makes this beer actually stand out is the dry hopping with Sorachi Ace hops. If you like Sorachi Ace hops this beer is a pleasure to drink, but if you don't like them you will find nothing you like about this one.

Nose is pretty potent, a mix of pine, citrus, tropical fruit and some caramel. Flavour is similar, pretty evenly mixed between sweet malt flavours and juicy, bitter hops. Full bodied, a bit sticky. A bold DIPA in all regards- pretty good.

Looks don't matter to me. Honestly, they don't. But when I see a Double IPA as murky, dark and lifeless as The Exchange's... well, I jump straight to the aroma in hopes that it's good enough to compensate for that. Indeed this one is - then again it uses four of my favourite hop varieties (Amarillo, Citra, Columbus and Sorachi Ace), so it damn well aught to.
Tasting blind, I might guess this a Barleywine. It has such a sweet, bready and biscuity maltiness, hints of macerated stone fruits and dark caramel, even a teaspoon of molasses mixed with all those hop resins on the finish. Alcohol is evident, though not painfully so. Nonetheless, it's definitely under-attenuated and has an unwelcome amount of dried fruit esters.
It also tastes a touch oxidized. A sticker on the bottom of the bottle indicated it's been 3 months since bottling (batch 29). Granted, the fresher the better, but a beer of this size and stature shouldn't show much wear in such a short time. Mind you, the hop bitterness is still as strong, snappy and sinewy as it gets - which, if you ask me, isn't entirely desirable.
Not even in a style that's by definition meant to be burly and bombastic with its use of hops. Let me be clear: hops are great. The more the better. But if their only contribution is astringently herbal bitterness then they aren't doing their job properly. Notes of festered pineapple and macerated pine needle become inundating pretty quickly. Graceful this is not.
Perhaps that was the idea. Either way, The Exchange Double IPA is one of those brutish, borderline obnoxious, chest-thumping, sledgehammer examples of the style that, for me, simply doesn't do it. Truthfully, even as such, it could be better made. These guys are young and obviously eager - I look forward to re-reviewing a more refined version of this in the future.
