This is what happens when you befriend a brewer!
Pours a murky orange color. Not much head is formed, but it does create an even film of white-colored head. Retention isn't great, nor is much lacing left behind on the glass.
File this in the "no shit" category - the aroma smacks of Mosaic hops. Even more impressively, it manages to capture that subtle blueberry quality that few Mosaic-hopped brews do. Beyond that lies grapefruit, orange, grass...okay, maybe a bit of onion. Despite the darker color, I personally don't pick up much malt beyond a twinge of caramel. A nicely well-rounded aroma that showcases its singular hop nicely.
Malts are a little heavier than the nose suggested. Still, they don't smother the flavor profile by any stretch. An initial piny bite quickly gives way to caramel, toffee, grapefruit...and blueberry! I love blueberry in a Mosaic IPA. Finishing touches of vanilla cream, guava, and black pepper also appear. This isn't some one-note hop bomb, it's actually a nicely nuanced IPA with a moderate level of layering.
The carbonation bubbles are very fine, making it seem slightly bulky-feeling for 6%. It lacks the soft creaminess of a NE-style IPA, instead showing a firm, slightly angular texture endemic of a west-coast interpretation. I don't think this has elite drinkability, but it doesn't really need it.
Mosaic makes me wary - sometimes I get a nice and fruity concoction, other times straight up scallion juice. This is the former, thankfully. Just a hair less malt would make this a showstopper, but it's not a bother. I'd look for it again.
3.79/5: Certainly not a Molehill of Mosaic
