Bottle Rocket Brewing Co. "Oktoberfest"
12 fl. oz. can "MFG08/09/22" and sampled on 12-22-22
$1.99 @ Hy-Vee Omaha #1, Omaha, NE
Notes via stream of consciousness: The beer poured clear until I hit the last bit from the can which delivered a fair amount of haze and particulate in suspension - my bad! It was a rough pour, however, and yet there's not a lot of head which doesn't bode well. The body is a golden amber and the head WAS off-white. In the nose I'm getting a small amount of malt and some apple-like fruitiness. That carries over into the flavor. The malt is sweetish, bready, and very lightly toasty. The apple-like fruitiness remains. That's not uncommon for a lager, even Budweiser has some apple to it, but it's a little bit stronger than that. It's clean, but I'm also not finding any lager yeast sulphur and I wonder if this is a lager. There's nothing on the label that says that it is, just that it's a "Märzen", and as well all know brewing styles can get stretched. Regardless, it's still tasty. There's some mild floral character to it, and a light herbal note emerges in the swallow. It's mildly bitter but not sweet (the label lists 18 IBUs), although I think it's still a little bit out of balance. In the mouth it's medium bodied and dextrinous, and gently crisp and then smooth with a moderate carbonation. That obviously has something to do with the lack of head retention as there's some nice lacing that looks like barren trees coated with snow around the banks of an ice covered pond. What I'm saying is that the lack of head retention isn't due to poor production, just the limited carbonation. Personally I feel that it's a little too soft but I'm sure a lot of people prefer it soft and smooth. While it's not great I think that it's fairly on track for the style and a little bit of refinement and balance could bring it 'round.
