CAN: Canned 05/23/19. 12 fl oz pull0tab with an orange label.
"Juicy. Blood orange. Crushable." 6.2% ABV.
APPEARANCE: Murky orange body. Creamy white head. ~5 minute head retention.
AROMA: Orange creamsicle. Hints of sherbert. A scintilla of vanillin. Pale malt. Muted citrus juice/citrus fruit acids.
Not the freshest or most blood orange-redolent aroma out there. I wouldn't single out blood orange if going in blind; the citrusy notes are pretty vague.
TASTE: Citrus creamsicle notes are evident, which is pleasant coupled with the 2-row malt base. Hints of vanillin from the creamy milkshakey fruit puree flavours. Pale malt. Floral hop notes.
Pleasantly citrusy, with a soft medium-bodied mouthfeel that supports its flavours nicely, mellowing out the citrusy acids but also taking the sharpness and zest out of the flavours. The result is a beer that while balanced doesn't commit to its titular blood orange flavours as much as I'd like.
OVERALL: A pleasant pale ale without a doubt, but not a beer I'd regularly choose over a more classic pale ale like, say, Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale. The whole creamsicle hop flavour aspect of the beer is fad-chasery but it does work. Those after a pale ale that really commits to blood orange might be let down, but it drinks easy and I couldn't see any pale ale fan actively disliking it. I'll enjoy my sixer.
