Brewery Techne "Grinding Grooves"
on tap @ Bar Hygge on 27 Feb 2016
$4 / 10 oz.

Notes: Very hazy orange body with a brownish cast beneath a creamy head of off-white that drops readily leaving only small amounts of spotty lace behind. The aroma is sweet, smoky like gouda cheese, and mildly fruity. The flavor is much more fruity (juniper?), sweet, and a little tart. It's moderately smoky; with a mild bitterness that allows it to finish sweet but also tart and drying. Juniper zestiness appears along with some woodiness in the finish. At first I thought of it along the lines of a sahti, but it's so much more. Fascinating!

"Gotlandsdricka (in modern Gutnish drikke or drikko, and drikku) is a traditional homebrewed alcoholic beverage made on the island of Gotland, Sweden. It is a kind of ale, closely related to the Finnish sahti, with a smoky, bitter-sweet, spicy (juniper) flavor."

On tap at the source.

Murky amber-brown pour, a small wisp of head died out within minutes, leaving the beer looking a bit flat and dull. Smoky malts up front in the aroma, some caramel sweetness apparent. Good smoke in the taste, definitely not overdone, mixing nicely with a piney/juniper taste, which normally I don't like, but it worked pretty good here. Feel was decent, again, kind of flat, but smooth as far as flavor-melding goes. Interesting take on an obscure style that frankly before this I had never heard of.
