How does one review an IPA made in Venezuela. First of all, it fits neither in the English nor American IPA category. It deserves its own style, but since that is an option I had to choose between the two, and opted for English since the hops was more reserved and the malt a little more carmel. In truth, it is more of a German IPA, since the brewers are German.
Look: LIke an IPA on the slightly paler side.
Smell: Definite complexity in the nose which is normally lacking in beers to be found in warmer climates. Nothing noteworthy, but nothing off-putting either.
Taste: Definite German yeast taste here. Again, I feel it is pointless to judge it according to style since there is no existing style to which it belongs. There is definite flavor here, nothing unpleasant about it, thought I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there are some adjunct elements involved. Definite hoppy bitterness, along with sweet malt (corn?)
Feel: Not much of a mouthfeel, but South American beers are not known for that. I imagine drinking a beer with a lot of mouthfeel in a warm climate such as Venezuela would be rather unpleasant and certainly not refreshing.
Overall: Not a bad beer when drunk on a dreary, chilly evening in Wisconsin. I imagine it would taste a lot better on a warm evening in Maracaibo or a bright sunny day at the beach. Worth trying, but probably not worth traveling to Venezuela for.
