Imperial stout aged 22 months in WL Weller bourbon barrels. Built expressly for a long sleep in oak, it began as a double-mashed, extended-boil house recipe stout with the depth to absorb time and barrel. From day one, it rested on choice Ugandan vanilla beans—meticulously prepared in-house to capture their full spectrum of creamy, floral, and soft spice character.

After nearly two years, the Weller barrel speaks in layers: crème brûlée and caramelized sugar, honeyed oak and toasted coconut, cocoa nib and candied pecan, dried fig, with a gentle wheated-bourbon warmth and a whisper of char.

Medium chocolate, a hint of dark fruits, leather and oak, vanilla-nougat, and a vanilla-bourbon barrel boozy nose on this one! Taste follows with a smooth, full, and semi-viscous, vanilla-creamy, chocolate and bourbon barrel finish. Whoa! Nice mouthfeel on this one! And I like how everything is pretty well balanced...nothing tries to dominate, but the vanilla and barrel and chocolate vibes and the velvety mouthfeel all make themselves known as a key player on this team! Ha! This is well done and fantastic!

My first beer from Flatland, and I’ve had my eye on them for a bit. Mostly, the simplicity of their styles and their label artwork. I was lucky enough to get access to this release and I jumped all over it. Let’s roll the dice.

Artwork: Insane label presentation. Between the minimalism, the linen texture label and the hints of red, I adore it. Turn it to the side, and you get this die-cut design with copper foil.. man.. I’m sold.

Pour: Jet black with deep viscosity. The pour coats the glass like molasses, settling into a black pool. Thin ring of brown bubbles that dissipate quickly, leaving the surface calm and still.

Aroma: Immediate hit of vanilla bean and candied walnuts. Floral, and slightly spiced. The barrel comes in waves: crème brûlée, toasted coconut and char. Bourbon warmth and oak are assertive but in balance.

Taste: This is super layered. Vanilla integrates beautifully, more dessert than extract. The barrel influence is strong. Caramelized sugar, dark fruit, cocoa nibs, and that wheated bourbon cherry. Sweetness is balanced with a charred oak dryness and subtle bitterness that reins it in. The finish is long, with dark chocolate and a touch of heat that reminds you it’s 14%.

Feel: Rich and chewy, coating but never cloying. Slick mouthfeel with very low carb. Each sip feels substantial without being exhausting.

Overall: Oh hey, Flatland.. You made a banger. It’s super balanced, dense, strong barrel influence and tons of flavor. Base beer stands up to over 2 years in wood, and vanilla is well integrated. I would love to taste this version without the additives, but this is wildly impressive for a small brewery.
