From a 32oz growler, filled at the brewery about, mmm, three hours ago. Served in a spiegelau IPA glass.
Pours a hazy, translucent, dark orange-gold with a big, pouffy head of foam. Retention is excellent, leaving fat gobs of suspended lacing.
Smell is old-school, piney, citrus-oily and caramelly-malty - that’s unexpected.
Taste is similar to the nose. Unusually balanced for a River Roost brew, the caramelly-malty character is quite prominent with the hop profile itself about equally divided between fruity and piney. Bitter, oily orange and turpy pine dominate with lesser notes of berry, pineapple, lemon and spice.
Feel is full and smooth as glass, medium-plus bodied and no more than adequately carbonated. Drying.
Overall, a technically very good brew which nevertheless made me sad. It tastes roughly similar to dozens of other, mass-market brews, albeit significantly fresher. So, no disrespect intended but, now that you’ve proved that you can brew an AIPA with the big boys, can we get back to the NEIPA’s?
