Blind-tasting, excl name/brewer and ABV% I'm approaching this one with interest as I do not equate the Med countries with brewing quality beer, even a monastry based down there.
L- Dark gold, pours (poured carefully) clear with a raging 7cm off-white head in this nucleated glass.
S- Boldly malty but with a brighter aspect in parallel.
T- Punchy, ooph, for sure! It's bold, clearly has heft, but the surprise is the solid 'pointy' dry hops going into the finish, skewering my palate again and again. It was that hop-level that I do not expect from beers from the Med. In fact do I expect it from a Tripel, or at least a Belgian one. I get no Belgian estery notes (fruity hop notes) here either. What I do seem to be getting is an overtone of English Barley-wine. It has the aspect of that style where it almost comes over as a cross between a beer and a wine, or a beer matured in sherry/port casks.
F- That kind of idiosyncracy means it's a slow-sipping beer for me; in fact I drink it almost at the speed of a wine vs beer, it's too hefty to rush.
O- Very different. Matured in timber barrels? Wine barrels? The super-dry note in the finish counters the heft of the overall brew. Is it wine or a mega dose of hops - hmmm. Interesting to try, something really quite different. I'm glad I bought it, but I'm not sure it works quite well enough for me to pay the £ again. The bold bright hops are in fact more youthful in style than my tastes. Hip monks - who'd have thought?
Bought from Beautiful Beers of Bury St Edmunds, UK. Rated+reviewed I scan the lable: BB 8/5/26 Incl. 3 grains, corn sugar + spices.
