Always love being the first to review a new Mast Landing beer... this place has been killing the game the past few months and they have brought me many enjoyable beers during the time of COVID-19. This is a fruited sour ale featuring mango (duh) plus a dose of dry-hopping from a blend of Pacific Northwest hops which bring forward powerful citrusy juiciness.
The pour here is beautiful, almost looks like I just poured a mango lassi into my glass. A surprisingly deep color with some light amber overtones and a golden overall hue. Hazy body with a nicely-built head that doesn't immediately dissipate into nothingness like many fruited sours these days. Some light lacing here and there but not much to fawn over in that regard. I will mention that, towards the end of my can, this started getting pretty chunky and dense with what I can always assume is real mango. Might turn off some people, but I think it lends a bit to the authenticity here. It's pretty good looking, though, overall... I really like the color and how dense it looks; it gives me the feeling this will be very fruit-forward and, as I mentioned, extremely authentic.
Strong hoppy elements right upfront in the nose; probably a big dose of Citra, maybe even some Simcoe and Centennial from what I can pick out. Tangerine, orange, pomelo, and, of course, big mango and tropical aspects punching through. The mango kinda sits behind the citrus, though, amusingly enough, though it all comes together pretty damn cohesively. I haven't had many ML sours (don't think I've had a single All The Way Up, which is their rotating fruited lactose sour series), but I'm already liking what I can detect of the sour profile here; it's not too lemony or lactic smelling, feels like it'll come across naturally on the palate.
First few sips are not shockingly sour but they definitely have some defined tartness, almost like sour candy but without the lingering malic acid note. It's kinda just tangy, and the awesome fruit presence really helps things along in the mid-palate, where juicy mango works with flavors of tangerine, grapefruit pith, and orange juice to build up, as the brewery states, "layers of fruit character." Feel is chewy and definitely not super light or drinkable, but it has a lot of flavor and character, and the recipe seems well thought-out. No hop burn, but there's definitely a dutiful hop presence here; this is quite simply not a beer I would recommend to people who dislike IPAs, despite it not being one, as it is more forward on hops than fruit or sour in some respects. I would recommend it for sure to anyone who likes the confluence of styles present here, as they are married pretty damn well.
