[IMG] Poured into a 20 oz tulip glass canned on 8/12/22. Pours a very attractive orange yellow with a finger plus sticky white head that leaves little bubbly lines of lace, with excellent retention. 4.5

Aroma is mango, mandarin, white grapes, apricot, and grapefruit rind. 4

Taste follows mango, mandarin, white grapes, apricot, and white grapefruit. 4

Mouthfeel is above average, gentle carbonation, maybe a tad dry, and at 8% ABV it has big flavor, but real easy going down. 4.25

Overall they keep putting out nice and reasonably priced NEDIPAs. I would say this one is worth a shot. 4.25

Mast Landing just dropped three new IPAs over the last week and I am definitely here for such an event. I've long been a fan of their hoppy styles; even though some of them are not amazing, they at least force me to consider how certain hop varietals interact and have aided me in developing my personal taste with regards to modern hop trends. I consider that some invaluable assistance, so let's see what's going on with Whomper, the biggest of their new beers!

Pour is a hazy deep golden-orange color with a gorgeous, huge, fluffy head of bountiful white foam. As it slowly sinks to a half-finger, it leaves behind some of the most awesome looking lace I've seen recently. This is a truly beautiful double IPA! Legs are nice, too, and the surface coverage of the suds, even after ten minutes in my glass, is exquisite. I am very ready to give this a shot.

The nose here is coconut, papaya, vanilla cream, orange sherbet, and pineapple. Ah, yes, this uses Sabro. Along with Cashmere, Sabro is probably one of the most distinct of the newer crop of previously-unnamed experimental hops considering its smooth character that feels less punchy and fruity than many similar hops. Though this beer also utilizes Nelson, Mosaic Cryo, and an experimental varietal called HBC-630, I really get Sabro more than any other specific hop. Whether you appreciate that or not is gonna depend on how much you like the coconut and creamier aspects it presents with. I personally believe this could probably stand to be a little more intense with the Mosaic, to be honest, as I'm missing the dankness they can provide.

On the tongue, the Nelson pops out a bit more, giving off lychee and white grape notes that mingle well with the juicy papaya and odd stone fruit-like references that are also happening here. I'm kind of over the nearly one-note coconut cream/orange thing that Sabro tends to do in these DDH recipes, though. Reading about HBC-630 leads me to believe it could probably be interesting (cherry/raspberry? Huh), but it feels very crowded out here, or just not honed-in-on. The feel here is nice and smooth... perhaps a bit too smooth? Very heavy-bodied and dense. Something about this rubs me the wrong way; it's definitely not bad, but it isn't great either. Like I said above, I think ML has really helped me figure out what trendy hops I prefer with a lot of their IPAs, and that's always helpful. I'm sure many people love this type of thing, but it might not be for me.
