Mast Landing Brewing Co.

IPA - New England / Hazy

Tropical berries and black current hops up-front. Fluffy and smooth feel, just as promised, except I'd say a bit on the flat, watery side. Fun and fruity hops, bright, with candy sweetness. I like a bit more zip, texture, and earthiness, but ok anyway.

Poured from a 16 oz can into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Hazed medium golden pour with thick foamy white head. Great lacing.

S: Fruit and citrus. Tangerine and mango.

T.F: Semi-sweet... super juicy. Big tangerine with some grapefruit, mango, and papaya. Drippy and tropical. Minimal bitterness with a little rind. Super creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Medium bodied. Tropical citrus punch to finish.

O: An outstanding big juicy/fruity NEIPA. Delicious flavor... super easy drinking. My 1st beer from Mast Landing. Definitely won't be my last.

Mast Landing have had quite the repertoire of good and great IPAs (mostly in the New England/hazy sub-style, but there have been some good outliers) over the past couple years, and this one in particular is double dry-hopped with some really high-quality varietals. It features Citra, Simcoe, El Dorado, and Rakau hops, which I happen to know is three out of four of the varietals used in Grimm's excellent Lambo Door DIPA (Rakau is not in LD, for the record). Definitely excited for this one, and hoping it's worth the four-pack investment. C'mon, ML... don't fail me now!

Pour is very solid... literally, actually. This is a super-dense and opaque looking beer with a sunburst-yellow and orange hued body that actually comes off really vibrant despite its heavy haziness. The head forms well, almost in a "nitro pour" kind of way, building up with a thick collar that laces spectacularly as a consistent sheet around the inner walls of the glass. Solid legs and some small islands of surface foam. I'm into it so far. Very much so.

There is an absolute ton happening in the nose here. It's almost overwhelming how this comes across. Let me try to break it down... first off, I get a big tangelo hit crossed with juicy papaya and guava. After that, there's an herbal and spicy grassiness and a hint of freshly-fallen pine needles bringing across a dose of complexity, just as candied grapefruit and musky passion fruit pop up after inhaling deeply. This smells so good! I don't really know which hops are bringing what to the table here, honestly, as it's really well-integrated and there is some crossover (El Dorado/Citra are good with tropical, Simcoe and Rakau can both be piney and resinous, but it seems Rakau has some stone fruit to it as well?), but trust me when I say this does a lot while not seeming overly-complicated, so it feels like it'll be impressive.

Yup, I knew it. Delicious stuff... starts off with a hit of tangerine and grapefruit with a mid-swallow of slightly grainy maltiness bringing a bit of balance in before a peppery and grassy spice entangles the palate. From there, mango and papaya undertones mix with some nectarine and even white plum before a semi-dank and earthy, piney finish carries everything to a solid, impressive conclusion. Like I said, there's a lot here, but it all feels well-defined and well-curated. Feel is plush and soft with a smooth and engrossing carbonation, featuring a finish that is hoppy but detailed and refined. Yeah, you're gonna want to grab this if you like the new crop of hazy IPAs ML has been doling out recently. It's just very good.
