A collaboration between Mast Landing Brewing Co. & Yakima Chief Hops to showcase the expressive and unique Idaho 7 varietal.
Paying tribute to the open air and hidden gems of the hop's home state, Canyons & Gemstones is a glowing and expressive double IPA.

This is a new DIPA from Mast Landing that was brewed in collaboration with Yakima Chief Hops in order to specifically showcase Idaho 7. I have a spotty relationship with this hop, but it's kinda been growing on me lately. Interestingly enough, this also utilizes Loral hops, which are a varietal I don't have much love for; they tend to be weird to me and I would prefer to see them used in saisons than in IPAs usually because of their focus on spice/herbal/dark fruit aspects. Anyway, let's hope for the best here!
Pour is pretty average, honestly. A ton of foam builds up atop a dingy, medium-amber beer that doesn't have as much vibrancy as I'm used to when it comes to ML IPAs. As the head fades (which takes quite a while as the retention here is surprisingly great, to this beer's credit) it leaves behind some inconsistent lace and has nice legs, so it seems like a lot of the appearance here is "half good/half meh," which isn't enough for me to consider my first impression to be superb.
The nose is not to my liking either, honestly. I get a lot of crystal-type malt upfront with a mix of tangerine, plum, odd spice and floral notes around the edges, and a hint of apricot. Some notes of melon and papaya come out as well, but something about this really doesn't seem great to me. It's got a dirty, unusual scent to it that just doesn't work to my senses. Coupled with the average appearance, we might have a rare failure by Mast Landing here.
Flavor is soapy, moderately-bitter and yeasty with strong ester notes and some flavors of melon, stone fruit, overripe mango, pear, and light tannins (as I7 is sometimes known to bring out). Not sure what's up with this one, but I'm going to chalk it up to being a pretty bad recipe, honestly. It didn't really look right to me upon my initial pour, and there's just nothing here that would sell this somewhat-unique and cool hop to me. Additionally, I think Loral might be partially at fault for the issues I have here, but I don't know how much of that hop makes up the composition of the hop additions themselves, so the jury is kinda out there. The feel is slick and oily, though unusually lean for an 8+ percent ABV beer. The carbonation is weak and ineffectual, and there isn't much bitterness or anything to really bring it to a level where I appreciate it beyond being a vehicle for a poorly-utilized hop. I don't say this about ML IPAs a lot, but pass on this one. Not successful, in my humble opinion.
