With the changing of the seasons, we take a look back at brewing traditions that long predate Mast Landing. The maibock is historically a celebration of Spring; of the thawing ground and the brightness peaking out from every corner of the world. We put our local spin on the style using Maine Malt House's pilsen malt and wheat, plus Czech Spalt hops for a touch of herbal spice. Rite of Spring drinks lager crisp but with a blooming, hearty, full body, just like the archetypes of the style.

Canned 2023/04/17
Pours a fizzy bubbly 1 finger head with fair to lower retention, a little lacing, clear tan to copper color
Nose lots of grainy malt, cereal and some toasted notes, biscuity, stronger richer grain and a bit of a sugary sweetness that hints at caramel but doesn't quite get the caramelization, fruity esters which is normal for a Maibock even though it's lagered, a bit of a tree pome fruit, candy apple, mild smooth perfumey alcohol
Taste brings more sweet malt, rich heavy malt character, grainy cereal but not doughy, some cracker bicuity like though, again sweet sugary but not quite caramelized, fair sweetness in general, into some mild smooth perfumey alcohol again, hint of toasted malt as well, smooth lagered character but still brings some fruity esters typical of the style canned a little early, mild pome fruit, a bit of bitterness kicks in late with a touch of herbal hop, semi sweet finish but not sticky or syrupy
Mouth is med to a bit richer bodied, lower carb also typical of the style, a bit of a warming but smooth alcohol
Overall pretty nice Maibock, enjoyable, a bit stronger than usual at 7% (this batch is 7%), but I could see this on an early spring day or late fall day to warm you up

A solid effort, now having had this new one twice. An interesting take with perhaps a bit more zing than I'd prefer, but plenty drinkable and enjoyable with many of the core qualities of the style. Decent effort, so I'll start it off with a nice rating!
