giant pastry stout named after a fire giant. See what we did there?
Much like Surtr, the fire giant prophesized to destroy Asgard during Valhalla, this giant of a stout is sure to destroy your taste buds with big Coffee, Oreo, Vanilla, and Chocolate notes. Starting at a whopping 35 plato, this is sure to hit your sweet tooth in all the right ways.

Poured from the 500mL can into a pint glass. This beer is a solidly opaque black color with a dark tan fizzy head.
Smell: Sweet primarily, with a backbone of coffee. Brown sugar and espresso. The beer advertises "coffee, cacao, chocolate sandwich cookies, and marshmallow." The first two of these are evident in the aroma. Mocha at times, but mostly sugary coffee.
Taste: Creaminess of the marshmallow comes through, as does chocolate. Not as much coffee as in the aroma. Much sweeter in taste. Chocolate chip ice cream. Finishes slightly boozy, and here is where the chocolate cookie comes into play - a little hit at the end like having oreos stuck in your teeth for a little bit. This is weird but not terrible.
A good change up for a dessert beer, but not a regular for sure. Nice, if a bit cloying.

Sword of Surtr is a well-executed pastry stout with a choco cookie backbone. Pastry stouts have been saturating the market and saturating my pint glass. This one, however, is very well balanced and even more impressive; it is at 13% ABV. I look forward to more stouts from Mason.
